A plant that eats flesh >>>>>>>>>>>>&g t;>>>>
Sundew, Drosera is its name.
Be not alarmed this plant only eats insects , flies and spiders.
I have seen this plant on holiday in Scotland in boggy areas. It can be founding Ireland and some other parts of Britain as well as foriegn countries.
The most common sundew species is Drosera rotundifolia there are are 3 species to be found in Britain they are Drosera Angelica and Drosera Intermedia
I shall tell you about Drosera Rotundiflora.
Drosera rotundifolia has 5 rounded leaves that form a rosette at the base of the plant.
These leaves surround the flower stalk. There are several very small white flowers on this stalk these only open for a few hours in sunlight.
While walking across the boggy heath land my eye catches a glistening in the grass. Little dew like drops are on top of lots of dainty little red fibres coming from the top of these round green leaves.
We sit to rest on the grass by one of these plants and think how attractive it is.
As we sit there a little flying midge comes past, it flys over the plant then back again it is tempted by the glistening dew drop and homes in for what it thinks may be a drink.
The midge is entrapped stuck in the sticky dew substance. It struggles in vain it can not get out the more it struggles the more its stuck.
The leaf slowly moves the fly to the centre and cups itself around the fly. This took about 15 minutes.
The fly drowns in the sticky secretion. The soft parts of the insect are slowly absorbed into the plant.
After resting and looking at the flowers we walk on fascinated by the wonders of nature.
It is possible to grow these at home I have seen them and other Droseras for sale on the internet for around £5. I think these carnivorous plants fascinating.
Summary: A plant that has sticky secretions that catch insects
