Advantages: Great benefits to the body

Disadvantages: Smells a bit

When you say garlic you automatically think strong tasting food that makes your breath stink, it's been known to ruin many a good meal.....

But did you know that people in the medical profession have identified more than 100 non - culinary uses for garlic?!

Garlic has been used to treat illness right back to when the pyramids were built, Egyptians gave the builders garlic to boost strength and prevent diseases and problems such as dysentery.

It has been used in both World Wars and even in plagues as a disinfectant, and some even say it may be an aphrodisiac ( cant imagine that with the smell!! )

It has been subject to over 1000 studies and is even involved in the study of treating Cancer. It has huge antibacterial and antioxident properties and is hugely beneficial to the human body.

So what can we use it for day to day? ...

Well, garlic has been used to treat every day ailments for years. Some of these include:

Colds and flu
coughs
Diarrhoea
Fungal infections
High blood pressure
Sore throath
Cuts and grazes
Ear problems
High cholesterol
Styes
Sinusitis..... To name but a few....

It contains more than 100 active compounds, one of which being Alliin, which gives it it's antibiotic properties and is great for the heart.
It is also thought to be very helpful to those who suffer from clots.
Dozens of studies now suggest that garlic blocks cell changes which can lead to cancer.

It is suggested that taking one to two cloves of raw or slightly cooked garlic a day is enough to obtain most of it's beneficial properties to the body. Cloves should be chopped or chewed for best affect. Parsley may be chewed after eating garlic to get rid of the taste and smell, and garlic is now available from healthstores in capsule form (400- 600 mg a day recommended), however, natural is always better.

The only time garlic is not recommended is if you are taking blood thinning medication, and if you still cant stomach eating a clove raw then at least add some to your cooking, not only will it give your dish a great taste but the benefits to your body are so great... can you really afford not to??!

Summary: If you like garlic, eat as much as possible!
