Advantages: Great taste, fat burning qualities
Disadvantages: May increase risk of breast cancer, squirts in eye!!
When I was growing up in the 80s, some of my aunties and friends mums used to swear by grapefruit as being a great way to lose weight. They used to do what was known as the grapefruit diet. The only effect that I noticed was that they were always complaining that they were tired.
No wonder! I have recently looked up what a grapefriut diet actually is.
You have to have grapefruit with pretty much everything and drink lots of grapefruit juice, and not take in more than 800 calories a day! Thats starvation!
More recently however there has been scientific proof that grapefruit has fat burning qualities, and just adding it to your diet without changing anything else can help weight loss.
In a study of 100 obese people over a 12 week period, the average amount of weight lose was 3.6lbs. When you consider that no other change to their diet was made, it is a good result.
So for anyone wanting to lose weight, a good way to do it would be to improve your diet, and reduce your amount of sugar and saturated fat intake, and undertake 30 minutes of moderate exersice 5 days a week, and add grapefruit to your diet.
Simple really.
However, you may have heard the term in physics, for ever action there is an opposite and equal re-action, well this applies to grapefruit aswell.
Sorry ladies but study has shown that eating grapefruit can increase the risk of breast cancer.
It's always the same these days, when one scientist finds that something is good for you, another one will tell you that it will make your head fall off!
But if you are a fat man, then go for it, I can't find any evidence that it effects anything down below.
Summary: Good to add to your diet, especially for men.
