A wildflower that looks great in gardens

What's the difference between a weed and a wildflower? Deciding to tackle this review has made me wonder about this one and a quick search online hasn't really enlightened me. I did come across the phrase - "A weed is just a plant in the wrong place", which rings true to me, and the growing popularity of wildlife gardens in the UK would seem to back this up. I have seen Stitchwort referred to both as one of the UK's precious wildflowers and also as a common weed. Either way it does produce a lovely delicate looking flower. I have seen it for sale online so it is obviously now becoming more popular for gardens. The Greater Stitchwort is a wild, star-like, white flower commonly seen in the UK in Springtime in woodland and hedgerows. It flowers from April to June and can be very prolific. It is quite tall with long narrow leaves. It belongs to the Caryophyllaceae family which includes several weeds such as Chickweed and Pearlwort as well as popular garden pinks like Carnations and Sweet William. It grows in a variety of soils and if planted in a wildflower herbaceous border will require only slight cutting back to stop it spreading. This plant is named for an apparent ability to ease a stitch, so, next time you're out jogging and pull up short, try rubbing one of these on your ribs.....and let me know if it works.
