Hawthorne Crataegus monogyna I looked in plants to see what Iknew about to write an opp on and found hawthorne So I thought yes I know a little about hawthorne , so here it is. Best planted in autumn before frosts, You can plant through winter but watch the frosts 18 inches-24 inches 45 –65 cm apart. Clip/prune once in mid summer Can grow to a hieght of 15-20 foot unless trimmed Hawthorn can make a good hedge. It is an attractive hedge and good for wildlife and a security hedge. It can be thick and prickly to climb over/ through I know this, as a child I used to try and push through the hawthorn hedge to make a den.. Has a white flower often called May not too pleasant a smell if I remember correctly A hawthorn hedge makes a good windshield Has an attractive colour in its leaves before they fall in the autumn and the berries a beautiful red brighten up the garden and hedgerow look super in an autumn flower display Hoverflies and other beneficial insects, many moths are attracted to the hawthorn. some feeding on the nectar the larvae of others eating the leaves. Thrushes will eat the hawthorn berry, and I have seen bird nests on the hawthorn branches. Thanks for reading my ramblings. Looking forward to the spring …Mary

- 17/01/03 Nice dense hedges can be kept trim and bushy even for small gardens, as you say very good for the birdies. |
