Heartsease - Viola tricolor
***The Plant***
The herb Heartsease will probably be better know to you by one of the following, Wild pansy, love lies bleeding, jack behind the garden gate, kiss me quick, field pansy to name just a few.
Heartsease is a wild flower that is native of North America and in most of Europe, and is found growing in hedgerows and wasteland.
Heartsease is a hardy perennial and grows about 6 inches in height. The leaves are a dark green and the flowers appear from spring to autumn.
The flowers have three main colours purple (memories), white (loving thought) and yellow (souvenirs).
***Cultivation***
Sow the seeds under protection in the autumn, place into a seed tray or in pots an do not cover the seeds. Winter them of in a cold frame or cold greenhouse and in spring harden them off and plant out about 6 inches apart.
Dead head the flowers to maintain flowering through the season, and in the autumn sow seeds for early spring flowers.
The plant is also happy to grow in containers in the part shade.
***Medicinal***
Heartsease tea has been given as a cure for a broken heart, and also for bed wetting.
An ointment can be made which is good for eczema and acne, and also can be used for cradle cap.
Herbalist use Heartsease to cure gout, rheumatoid arthritis and respiratory problems.
An infusion of the leaves and then added to the bath water has been proved beneficial to sufferers of rheumatic diseases.
***How to make a infusion***
Ingredients
1 teaspoon or 1 tablespoon of herbs in a tea pot
1 cup of boiling water
1, Boil the water
2, Put the herbs into the cup/pot
3, Poor the boiled water over the herbs
4, Cover the cup or pot
5, Wait 5-10 minuets
6, Pour the infusion through sieve
7, Drink the tea in small sips
8, Add honey to taste if you need to
9, Put the old herbs on he compost bin
***Culinary***
The flowers can be used in salads and to decorate sweet dishes, like a fruit cocktail.
***WARNING***
To much taken can cause vomiting.
As with all herbal medicine do your researches before you use it
