Advantages: good for wildlife
Disadvantages: poisonous
And the Ivy Hedera helix ,well I wrote about holly and too remain seasonal heres Ivy. First a warning , all parts esspecially berries and young leaves are poisinous if eaten , they care an irritant of skin. There are several species the plain green leaved one and ones like gold heart that has a yellow/gold splash of colour in the centre,Another has gold edging to its leaves It flowers september to novemb, berries are to be found November to the spring Seems to grow in most soilsit is happy in a poor soil does not like too much light. The flowers are insignificent yellow, green which are very rich in nectar butterflies and bees love to feed from them .The holly blue caterpillar feeds on its leaves.Birds such as thrushes and black birds love to eat.the berries. It is also a good roosting and nesting place.I vy is a very usefull plant to have in your garden if you like wildlife Ivy grows up many a wall, hedge, fence, or tree.A small variety is good for a hanging basket. Needs a little pruning or it gets too big and heavy covering its host and smothering it. Ivy is used a lot for decorations at christmas or for weddings. Evergreens like the Ivy signify a continuation of life Ivy signifies life, death , renewal, fertility, and fidelity It is dedicated to the roman god Bacchus, the greek god Dionysus . It is connected to the Eygyptian god Osiris who was killed by his brother and whose body was cut in to pieces and spead all over the country . His wife Isis travelled searching for his body and planted a piece of ivy wherever she found some of his body. Oh I forgot protects against witches

- 01/12/02 Nobody in our house cares for ivy, but the ivy loves us. At the bottom it's a very think bush with tree-like stems, and it has already grown up to the roof (15 m) , it starts blocking the window of one room and keeping the light out. Someone has to cut it. There are certainly no witches in our house! |
