Advantages: Easy to grow and needs little looking after
Disadvantages: Can get a bit woody after a few years
Lavender is a very versatile plant. However it is also a bit of a marmite plant - people either love it or hate it there really doesn't seem to be happy medium.
I think this is may be because of the "old lady" associations that it has. However I really love it in my garden. I am not the greatest of gardeners - I like to have a neat and tidy garden but I don't really want to spend hours and hours tending all the plants - I'm much happier sitting in my garden appreciating it with a chilled glass of white wine in my hand!
This plant is ideal for me - it is really hardy and once it is established it really is quite difficult to kill off. It needs minimal attention - if you want you can leave it totally to its own devices and just let it ramble away (though it may get a bit woody and straggly)- you can keep it small and so trim it back once a year so that it stays small or if you want to can make it into a hedge.
The aroma that the whole plant gives off is lovely - there is nothing better than rubbing your hands through the plant on a summers evening and getting that natural lavender smell wafting up (rather than the artificial lavender smell that toiletry manufacturers make us to smell). Though do be careful when you do this because bees are naturally attracted to the lavender flowers themselves.
Summary: Good shrub to put in a spare part of the garden
