Advantages: Wonderful smell and a useful cooking herb

Disadvantages: goes mad in the garden if you don't confine it

Mint is very easy to grow in the garden. The problem is that it grows too easily and readily and it will spread itself all over the garden in a very short time. This can make it hard for other plants to survive and occasionally spread disease. I planted mine in an old biscuit tin. You know, the type you ge assorted biscuits in at Christmas. Punch some holes in the bottom to make sure it can drain okay and sink the tin into the soil.

Mint will grow well in plastic containers on a window sill or balcony. Its very hardy and only requires watering. You should be able to cut fresh mint all year round.

The smell of fresh mint is wonderful. It helps keep flies out of the kitchen if you grow it there. Apart from the obvious 'mint sauce' to eat with lamb (I have it on beef as well), this is a useful herb for cookery. Put some in your potatoes of add a few leaves to a bowl of salad (I wouldn't recommend eating these though, just use them for the added flavour and the fresh smell.) Add bunches of mint to the table display if you are preparing a buffet meal.
