Narcissus is the botanical name for daffodil, brought to England’s fair shores by the Romans.

What I (and I think most people) always think of as a narcissi is not the large trumpet like daffodils but the more delicate Narcissi, the smaller headed narcissi with a perfume are what I think of as a narcissi . There are many flowers in this group, they come in several varieties. The flowers can be pure yellow they can be a bright yellow petal and trumpet, or a yellow petal and a paler trumpet, or an alternate dark yellow /orange centre and paler yellow leaves.

These flowers are pretty and dainty they would make a lovely flower for a winter/spring wedding.
I always like to have early spring flowers in the house; it blows away for winter blues.
It may be a little late to force some Narcissus into bloom for Christmas, but I think this weekend I shall put some in a pot for January blooming. I also have some I shall plant in the garden

Planting and growing for the house
~~~~~~~~~~~
Planting bulbs in pots is a super thing to do with children keep them indoors and your child will learn about living things.
To grow Narcissi in a pot you just need some potting/ bulb compost a pot and patience also a memory to water them.
Put a little compost in the pot then place the bulb in it and cover with compost. water and then to force this bulb place in a cool dark place keeping it moist a shed is idea when the leaf tips appear bring it into the light and keep watering a little place it in a cool place and when flowers begin to form bring it into the warmth of your house, you will be rewarded by seeing the flowers. Ideally for Christmas blooms you should plant them in September. But these will make a great Christmas pressie for auntie or nana as they will bring spring into the house.
To plant narcissi in the garden
~~~~~~~~~~

Narcissus is good to plant from August to November in the garden, Plant in a depth about 3 times the height of the build about 15cm/6 inches. Narcissi look super in a pot on the patio or by the front door.

Flower narcissus gets it name from a story about Narcissus. This was a handsome young man and while sitting by a stream looking in he fell in love with his reflection, The gods took sympathy on him and turned him to a flower Often we see Narcissus by the water edge head drooping down looking at himself forever.
Vain people who keep looking at themselves in the mirror often get called narsistic

Contradictions
~~~~~~~~~~~~
I discover the word Narcissus comes from the Greek word for numbness the plant has narcotic properties of the plant. The sap from the stem of narcissus can cause a rash. The bulb if eaten is poison. So do make sure that if you are planting these with your child that they are not likely to put them in their mouths.
Summary: A daffodil by another name
I agree, they make a lovely Christmas present. I much prefer having potted plants than cut flowers.
