Advantages: Can be used for so many things, easy to grow, not expensive to buy
Disadvantages: can make your eyes water
Onions are easy to grow. plant the sets in a weed free well fed environment and wait. Keep it weed free. Make sure the sets are not pulled out and you should get a crop of onions ready to eat. when you have grown your onions you may find you have a rather large crop to store. This is also easy. You dry them out in the sun. then plait the leaves together and they are ready to use. keep an eye on them or you may find they have gone mouldy and are no use. The easiest thing of all is to use onions. I use them every day near enough. How do you like your onions. My children do not think that they like onions. They do not know how many they eat. You can eat them raw. Just do not go too close to anyone afterwards. You can eat them as fried onions, lovely with burgers or sausages. You can roast them in olive oil. What a flavour. You can boil them whole and serve in a white sauce made with the water. My mouth is watering as I write that. Onion soup is a good option, maybe a cream of onion soup or my favorite French onion soup. It is so easy to make french onion soup. Fry about 1 or 2 Lb of onions for ages until they are well browned, not burnt. Add flour 1 or 2 oz, stir that in with a few beef stock cubes. Gradually add water stiring it in making sure you do not get lumps of flour. This should make about 4 Pints of soup. I love to eat this wiht toasted cheese in it. If you have beef stock use that instead of the stock cubes and water. Do not forget to season to taste. I might have that for my lunch today! Onions are also very useful as part of other dishes:- Mince spaghetti sauces Lots of soups burgers many currys chineese dishes The list could go on for days. If I could not get hold of onions I would be stuck. As I said at the start they are easy to grow. They are also generally quite chea
p to buy. How can one vegetable do so much.

- 06/06/01 We use onions a lot too. RE : HAYFEVER - Take your daughter to the GP. They should be able to give you an antihistamine syrup like Piriton or Clarityn on prescription. My daughter is 10 & has had hayfever for 2 years. It works for her. Hope your daughter improves :-) |
