Advantages: It works for me!

Disadvantages: None

Another gem from my Home Economics teacher.

One day she had the whole class chopping onions for a shepherds pie we had to make.
Pretty soon about five or six girls were 'crying' with no way of escaping the classroom.

The cure worked then and always works for me now - the moment your eyes start to water rinse your hands under the tap with cold water. The colder the water, the better. I think this works because it is like the short, sharp shock treatment.

Another tip which helps is to rinse the blade of the knife you are using with cold water before you start chopping.

Also, I find it helps to put the extractor fan on.

Lastly do not rub your eyes with your hands after you have been chopping or you will make things worse. If you need to rub them with clean dry kitchen roll.

I've heard that before but never tried it...my mum's advice always works for me. That is to chop the "bottom" off first, then chop the "top" (the end that sprouts if you leave it too long in the pantry!), and straight away turn the "top" face-down onto the chopping board. This is where the vapours that make you cry come out. Works for me - maybe it helps that I wear glasses! (If I wore goggles instead I'd probably chop my finger off!) Try it! ;-)

Hmm, im not sure those methods would work, but I'll try it next time. Another trick (and this works great if your in the food trade) is to just keep choping until your immune to it :o)
