PRETTY, PERKY, PANSY. Pansy that pretty cheerful little face greets me everyday as I open the door. Pansies can be bought quite cheaply in garden centres or you can raise your own from seed. I have raised some from seed in the past but the ones I have in pots to greet me home from work I bought at the garden centre. I shall soon have to think about buying seeds to sow this year. Pansy is a delicate flower often they have a face or can be plain coloured. They are cultivated from violas, which grew wild. I remember finding the little wild pansies on country walks as a child. I love the little wild pansies the field pansies and violas. I have some growing in my garden dainty and pretty The name pansy is derived from the French pensee meaning thought, remembrance. A pansy is usually grown as an annual but it is a perennial. Pansy is a relative of violet, if you look you will see the similarities 5 petals of the same shapes Pansy has wide varieties of colour blue my favourite, red, purple, orange, white yellow pink and some black. Pansies come in various sizes small about 1 inch 4cm in diameter, medium 2 inch6cm in diameter or large 4inch 11 cm in diameter. The wild pansies are even smaller. Pansy likes a well-drained soil and plenty of water. They are quite happy to get cold and survive frosts. A useful source of colour on a cold winters patio. Pansy seeds are easy to obtain and fairly easy to grow A packet of cheap universal pansy seeds containing 150seeds can be bought for as little as £1.30p or specialist posher pansies £2. 79p for a packet containing 25 seeds. Prices vary with different seeds merchants. Each flower produces lots of seed the can be saved for next year. To grow pansy seeds sow in a tray of moist compost keep moist, prick out plants, as they get bigger. Then plant in growing position when they are a good size. Seeds sown
in spring, February, March will flower in May, June and the summer months. Sow your seeds in June they will flower in the autumn. Sow seeds in September for early spring flowering. I shall be purchasing some seeds soon for sowing this spring. Thanks for reading it made me more cheerful to think of the spring and flowers on this dark cold night

- 30/01/03 Mine aren't blooming :-( They looked lovely when I first planted them but they stopped blooming just before Christmas and since then, nothing. Not as much as a bud. ~Sharon |

- 30/01/03 I love pansies. I never even thought about growing them from seed before as they look so delicate. Excellent opinion. |
