Advantages: quick to grow
Disadvantages: I dislike them
Radishes I hate them they taste peppery, hot unpleasant to me hubby likes them says they are a crisp clean taste too. Radishes are often added to a salad I always pick them out.
My first experiences with radishes was as a young child, I used to spit them out, however I was encouraged to grow some in the garden I had a small patch that was mine. I grew some round red radish a globe radish its too long ago for me to remember the variety.
I dug and raked my soil then made a shallow drill /trench. I sowed the seed thinly in the drill and covered it with soil and watered it.
I was delighted when the green leaves showed within a week and by the end of four or six weeks the radish were ready to pull from the earth .I washed them with my mum took the leaves of and gave them to dads for his tea, no I still did not like them.
Radish are a great first veg to grow with your child as they grow so quickly, do not leave them too long in the ground or they will go woody and tough.
Radishes will grow any time from spring to autumn.
You could grow some in a pot if you had no garden instant salad on your windowsill
Radish seed are fairly cheap and a packet contains a lot of seed (100-200). Thompson and Morgan seed merchants
(http://seeds.thompson-morgan.com/uk/en/list/radis h?ER=overuk;term=radish) sell them for between a pound a 2 pounds depending on variety.
The varieties are globe (as name suggests these are round) red radish with a white centre. There are long radishes that taper, cylindrical long radishes cylinder shaped. There are some larger radishes that have a green skin and creamy centres. Also a large dark red one with red centre.
Radishes are best picked and eaten shortly after picking as they tend to go soft in the fridge if left too long. Apparently the large ones can be eaten cooked.
