Advantages: Great taste, even raw! Lovely and Sweet!

Disadvantages: Slightly more expensive.

Whilst to some people it may sound slightly sad, Red Onions are my Onion of choice and my favourite Onion variety. They taste fantastic raw, and are especially good in Salads and to anyone who is inexperienced with Red Onions, I highly recommend that you try them.

Although called Red Onions, they are probably more aptly described by their alternative common name "Purple Onions". This colouration refers to the outside of the onion, the inside flesh, just like in any other onion is white.

The Red onion is available throughout the year and has a much sweeter and far less spicey taste than it's white counterpart. The colour itself is very appealing in Salads, as despite the flesh being white, it still has a purple tinge, and this really adds enough colour to a Salad to make it look quite spectacular.

I would definately suggest that Red Onions are best eaten Raw, Grilled or Lightly Cooked. Heavily Cooked dishes are probably more suited to the White Onion, as the Red seems to loose colour and flavour with high heat.

Summary: I love these Onions to bits!
