Advantages: easy to grow
Disadvantages: I do not like it
Spinach -----spinacia oleracea—Chenopodiacea Spinach beet------ beta vulgaris Popeyes food Yes I could eat out of a can but I don’t. Spinach is good for you contain’s iron, also I read somewhere it reduces the chances of cataracts developing in your eyes I grow a row of spinach in my garden. My husband likes spinach a lot .I do not like it as a vegetable on its own but a spinach and potato curry is good. I grow mine in my organic garden easy needs little care. Spinach seeds are available from garden centres and seeds merchants not very expensive for a packet about £1. I have grown both spinach and spinach beet, tend to grow the beet more . The leaves are courser and have a stronger flavour. The plants are longer lived. Some varieties are suitable for spring, autumn sowing some to summer in the summer spinach tends to bolt (run to seed) the variety of seeds specially designed for summer sowing do not bolt as quick. Check the seed packets and see which is more suitable to your needs. Soon it will be time to sow a row end of Feb beginning of March I shall dig and rake my garden patch. I will make a drill (a shallow trench I make this with a stick my dad makes his with a hoe) I will sow the seeds in the drill thinly (spinach seeds are tiny) and cover them with soil. Spinach does not like to be dry so keep well watered . After a weeks or two I will see the first little green leaves shooting up out of the earth these will quickly turn into little plants. I will not be tempted to move /transplant the spinach plants it is rarely successful in about 6 to 10 weeks after sowing I can pick my first crop dainty tender little leaves to add to a salad. Then as the leaves grow bigger and I have more quantity I shall use them in a curry or cook them as a green veg for my husband. I sowed some spinach seeds last October they are still providing me with leaves for a
n occasional curry.. Although I haven’t spinach can be grown in pots on the patio just need to keep them well watered. Spinach produces more new small leaves as you pick the leaves for cooking. To keep producing new leaves pick of the old tatty ones on the outside of the plant add them to your compost heap. Freezes easily I usually freeze some ready to make a curry, rarely use it though as i usually have some growing all of the year Well that’s how to grow now how do I make that spinach curry? 2 tablespoons of oil 1 chopped onion 2 cloves of chopped garlic 1-inch ginger chopped 1-teaspoon turmericpowder1 teaspoon chilli or paprika powder 1-teaspoon salt 1-teaspoon coriander 1teaspoon garam masala 1LB /450G washed and chopped potatoes 1lb spinach or greens (I have made it with broccoli leaves) Lightly fry onions, ginger and garlic in the oil add salt and spices and fry for another couple of minutes. Add the potatoes to the spices and continue to cook till potatoes half cooked. Then add the well-chopped spinach. Continue to fry till the spinach is tender and the potatoes well cooked. Sprinkle with garam masala just before serving. Spinach does not take long to cook as a green veg. Wash spinach and steam or boil for 5to 10 minutes in salted water, drain well and press the water out of the leaves before serving. Might just pick some and cook it give my husband a treat this lunchtime. Then he can flex his muscles to impress me. Thanks for reading Mary
