Advantages: Cheap
Disadvantages: Dont taste of anything
I have such fond memories of going picking with my best friend in my childhood. We would look like hunchbacks by the time we had picked a huge basket full but it was worth it as we stuffed ourselves to bursting as we picked.
Strawberries are a member of the Rosaceae family and are actually a know as a 'false fruit' because they don't come from the plants ovaries but from the area that holds the ovaries. They can come in all shapes and sizes and are bright red in colour with lots of little seeds dotted all over. The strawberry is a well known speed food which means that it takes more calories to consume the fruit that what is actually in the fruit itself.
Strawberries have the most amazing fresh taste. The skin is fleshy and very easy to bite through and then you get lots of juice and flavour which fills your mouth . I find that it only takes a few chews before the piece has disappeared and you need to refill again.
Strawberries are such a versatile fruit that can be enjoyed in many ways. Being a chocoholic, I like to dip them in melted chocolate then pop them in the fridge until the chocolate has melted. They are also great in jellies and fruit salads, cheesecakes and cakes and just about any dessert you can think of.
After all these years I still have a real love for strawberries and would like to grow my own when I have a little time for two reasons;
1) The punnets from the supermarkets are so expensive for the quantity that you get. I find that I can pay around £3 for a small punnet that has around ten strawberries inside. As you guys know by now, I don't eat inmoderation so one punnet will be gone in one sitting so it can work out quite expensive.
2) The quality of the strawberries at supermarkets aren't up to scratch. I find that they look pretty amazing but if you had a mask on, I am so sure that you wouldn't know what you are eating due to the lack of flavour in some of them.
You probably guess what I'm going to say about these Strawberries from Sainsburys after reading the above. I bought these a while a go and was not happy with them. The were tasteless and very small even though they cost me £1.39. I think because they were so small that made them very hard and you could tell that they were the off cuts or the ones left behind in the fields that were good for nothing. They weren't a pleasant eating experience at all. I would recommend giving these a miss and going for the more expensive ones that Sainsburys do as they are much bigger and nicer.
Over all the strawberry is one of the nicest fruits out there and they are in season right now so go and find your nearest strawberry fields and start picking or better still, grow your own. If you can't do that then Sainsbury's are doing them at half price at the moment.
Summary: I wouldn't buy these again.
