Advantages: Cheap for supermarkets, ideal as a complement to other foods
Disadvantages: Small, not great tasting, not aesthetically pleasing, market stalls do strawberries better!
If I could pick one food to take with me to a desert island purely for their taste, strawberries would be it. Ever since I was a kid I used to love going to strawberry farms and picking my own little red fruits of goodness, whilst eating the rest on my walk round. I cannot think of anything strawberry flavoured I do not like - for me, its my perfect berry.
The only problem with strawberries these days is that in the supermarket they are expensive - too expensive considering what else you can get for the money, plus also how cheap you can get them from a market stall. I usually get mine from there - they are cheaper, normally nicer tasting and you get more in a punnet compared to their supermarket brethren. But I ran out of my weekly batch, and I had a craving for a bowl of sugar and cream - so off I went to Sainsbury's!
These are Sainsbury's own brand value strawberries. I picked them up because I was not willing to pay the extra price for the nicer and larger looking red fruits. These only cost me £1 for a punnet weighing 250g. Not amazing value, but compared to punnets only slightly larger for £2.99, there is a big difference. The berries themselves were quite small in this batch, and I had a couple which were slightly bruised, but that only affected the aesthetics.
Strawberries are often the food of choice for romance, and if you are thinking on using these berries for a meal with your date, forget it! They have a dull red colour, they are small, and in all honesty it will make you look like a cheapskate. Consider yourself warned!!!
The tastes of the berries are not amazing, but I did not expect them to be. Instead they are a bit like your slightly below average strawberry, just smaller. They still have some decent flavour in them, and the green stalks are easy to remove. But they certainly are not of exquisite taste making you crave for more. Because of this I would recommend having them coupled with another substantial food, such as a bowl of cereal in the mornings, or perhaps use them to create your favourite smoothie. This will help mask some of the lesser flavour these strawberries have, whilst still providing that strawberry taste.
Overall, these strawberries are not that bad. I got what I expected - a second-rate strawberry at a much cheaper supermarket price. But in all honesty, if you have a local market near you, nine times out of ten their strawberries will be better looking, tastier, larger and cheaper then anything you can buy in the supermarket.
Summary: Ok if you want your strawberries as a side to something more substantial - otherwise look elsewhere.
