THYME I was tending my herb garden in the sun yesterday planting the small plants of thyme I have grown from seed this year and crushed a leaf mmmmmm inspiration for an op so here it is I bought the thyme seeds early this year and sowed them in a seed tray. I was surprised at how many germinated and grew successfully they are now tiny plants I have edged my herb garden with. I love the smell of thyme makes a lovely aroma when burnt on the barbeque. Thyme attracts bees to it for nectar and white butterflies. There are many species of thyme I think the one I have grown is thymus vulgaris (common thyme) I also have lemon thyme smelling very lemony. Thyme does not like the wet so it should do well on my dry chalky soil Thyme grows as a bushy shrub to a height of30-45 cms (12-18 in) has a spread of 60 cm (24in) It has grey green leaves Flowers in the summer with white to pale purple flowers. It is best to cut these flowers back after it has finished flowering I have found a recipe I am going to try for the first time today (will let you know how it goes later) French beans with Thyme Ingredients 25G (1 OZ )butter 1 medium onion chopped 4 rashers of bacon rind taken off and chopped 700g (1 ½lb) french beans topped and tailed 5ml (1 tabs) chopped fresh thyme mmm I can smell it now How to make it Melt butter in large saucepan, Add bacon and onion cook for 10 minutes, Add the beans and thyme to the pan with some seasoning (salt and pepper) Simmer for 10 minutes till the beans are cooked) A little thyme sprinkled on tomato?s grilled on the barbeque is good Thank you for reading-Mary

- 06/01/03 Another useful opinion. I have found Thyme invasive into the lawn unfortunately, but a great smell underfoot. |
