Tomatoes are not realy a fruit you can grow in the open due to our cold british weather we need to grow our tomatoes in a greenhouse.

I dont usually plant mine untill early may as the frost will definatley kill them.
I use grow bags to grow the tomatoes in as they dont require a lot of soil as there roots are not too large but the plant itself does get to around 6 foot tall. I space 3 plants along my grow bag, one at each end and one in the middle.

I have never attempted to grow a tomato plant from seed as i always buy mine from a garden center as a baby plant.

As tomatoes are very heavy they tend to pull the plant over so i tie mine to the poles in my greenhouse to stop this happening with garden string.

There is no mistaking when your tomatoes are ready to eat as they will be hanging off the plant, green to begin with but will soon ripen in a couple of days to a lovely red tomato.

At the end of september you need to remove any fruit from the plant that is left even if it is not ripe yet as the first frost will spoil your fruit.
To ripen any unripe fruit just put them on your window sill inside the house to warm and get some sun, they will soon ripen.

My tomato plants usually have there first ripe tomatoes ready to eat after about 10 weeks of planting them.

You get quite a lot of tomatoes from each plant so 6 plants should give you a plentiful supply of tomatoes all through the summer.

I usually have 3 ordinary tomato plants and 3 cherry tomato plants as these are nicer with salads.
