Advantages: nice flowers
Disadvantages: none
Verbena, I recently bought two verbena plants from the garden centre one was a verbena bonariensi, the other one a short purple verbena that is good for ground covers. There are a few other plants in this group of flowers.
The reason why I bought the verbena bonariensi is that it is a good nectar plant attractive to butterflies.
This is quite a tall plant grows up to about 150cm's has a spread of 45 cm.
This flower grows on top of tall stems, there are a few narrow green leaves growing sparsely up the stem. The stem divides into several small stems which hold a flower head on it, the flat flower head is several small pink purple flowers these are good as a cut flower for the vase.
This plant is a perennial that you can grow from seed in April time. This verbena likes a well drained soil yet likes to be kept moist so should do ok in my chalk soil.
The verbena borariensi is a perennial but may not survive a cold winter as it can get damaged by the frost. So I shall try and remember to mulch my plant in the winter to keep it warm.
There is a lemon verbena this is a tall plant and the leaves smell lemony and are often use to flavour food the flowers of this verbena are white or lilac.
The flowers in this verbena species are white, lilacs, pinks and purples.
Apparently the verbenas should grow from self set seeds if I let my plants seed I expect I shall do that.
The verbena that I bought for the front of the front garden is verbena rigid sometimes known as sandpaper verbena due to the texture on the leaves. The lance shaped leaves are plentiful forming a mat on my border and the flowers are popping up in clusters about 3 inches tall. Again the flowers in flat flower clusters these are purple flowers which have a sweet fragrance. These are a perennial too I hope they survive many years. They flower July through to September. This plant is quite pretty and flowers well.
Thanks for reading Mary
