Panasonic's TH-42PWD3 is a professional plasma display panel that will be sold to consumers under the model number PT-42PD2-P. The 3-inch-thick TH-42PWD3 has a native resolution of 852 x 480, or Wide VGA in computer terms. That's perfect to display 480-line progressive DVD and digital TV, but HDTV (high-definition TV) sources and higher-resolution computer images must be scaled down to fit the available pixels using the 42PWD3's internal processor. Unlike many plasma displays, the 42PWD3 can achieve horizontal scan rates of up to 110 kHz, enough to accept a 1600 x 1200 computer signal. Picture enhancements include what Panasonic calls a Real Black Drive System (to improve contrast), three selectable gamma settings and three brightness modes. Two aspect ratio settings accommodate 4: 3 and 16: 9 images.
