Playmobil 4853 Meerkat Family
by azana Meerkats have been enjoying rather a renaissance in recent times, which is why it was a real surprise to be able to pick up this set for £5 from boots.com - it's widely available for the £10 mark. For this price you get everything you can see in the product photo above. As well as one Playmobil sized person (if you are not familiar with ... them they are around 6cm high), you get 5 Meerkats in 2 different poses, 2 sitting and 2 standing. There's also some vegetation, a tree and two feeding barrels, one large one small and food, lots of it which fit around a solid plastic base that is about 10-15cm across and has a tunnel under it. Once out of the box there is a small amount of assembly to do - there is a sticker to put on the large barrel - Meerkat must be "Merkat" in German if this sticker is to be believed). You also have to assemble the trees and vegetation and put the food in the barrels. This is really a job for an adult but doesn't take long. Speaking about adults - if you are the type to not like small bits the food is not going to please, there are hundreds of lentil sized Meerkat food which can be shaken out of the barrel by the little Meerkats brandished by a young playmobil devoutee. Kids seem to like the play value provided by the food though. My daughter finds feeding the Meerkats and various other animals with the food endlessly interesting. The food looks like little red lentils - I'm not sure what Meerkats actually eat - the advert didn't say, but they look like they are supposed to be some kind of pellets. My daughter seems to love being able to perch the Meerkats in the various holes and niches in the log. The log can also be removed and she likes to hide the cats under the base. The meerkats have heads that turn and are really lifelike, they don't tend to fall over with play and the keeper grasps the little brush set that comes with it well and can even hold small bits of food. As a stand alone set this would work pretty well, but it's even better as part of the zoo that we also own and has a great deal of play value in my opinion as there are plenty of different things to do with such a small set. I think the manufacturer's age guideline of 4 and above is spot on - with the teeny bits it's probably not best suited for a younger child, though you could removed the food items the meerkats are probably of swallowable size. As I would expect from playmobil, the build quality of this is excellent and definitely passes the kid test, though the little bits of food do tend to go anywhere. At the price I paid this was a definite bargain, it's a great set. Read the complete review |

Playmobil 4161 Advent Calendar Post Office
by louisechackett After reading a review on a Lego advent calendar before Christmas I had pretty much decided to buy one for my son. Amazon is often my first point of call for things these days and whilst on there I noticed playmobil advent calendars too and so I decided to give my son a choice of which he would like. He chose the playmobil post office ... set. The package arrived quite quickly and as it was around a week or so before the 1st of December I put it on top of the display unit we have in the dining kitchen. The main reason I did this was because there was an instruction book in the slip case and on this it showed which items of playmobil you would receive each day! Whilst I realise it is a good idea to document what you get in the kit I felt it was a bit silly to say when you get them as this ruins the element of surprise for the child should they get hold of the instruction book! The actual advent calendar is a thick cardboard box which is obviously much wider than normal advent calendars so that it can fit the playmobil pieces in. The front features a picture using items you will receive in the calendar which is a nice idea I think. Much like other advent calendars there is a tab at the top of the calendar which has a hole in for you to pin the calendar up. I actually used three pins here as well as big blobs of blutak in all corners to ensure it stayed up on the wall and this worked well. The doors on the calendar are all obviously numbered and are not uniform in size to accommodate the varying pieces of playmobil behind them. My son found that the doors were a tad tricky to open and so I would run my finger nail along the perforation for him and then he was fine to do the rest independently. We didn't see this as an issue at all and simply put it down to the fact that thick cardboard is used to make the advent calendar so sturdy. My son was so excited to open this advent calendar and so on the last day of November we built the cardboard scenery to which the playmobil would be added. Despite being made from a thin card this held together really well though I would advise an adult does this part as it involves some folding and pushing tabs through holes which may rip if you were too heavy handed. Each morning as my son opened the advent calendar he would be excited to pull out the little plastic bag with playmobil in so he could develop this post office scene. Items included in the set were Father Christmas, a table and chair, post box and letters, a functional Father Christmas stamp, angel, elf, reindeer, sleigh, tree, naughty list as well as many other items too! My son had such fun each day adding to the set and seeing what he would receive that day. The more pieces he added to it the more he played with it. I personally liked having the festive scene set up in the front room during the run up to Christmas and it was a talking point for friends and family too as well as being a functional toy to play with. Once Christmas and the New Year was over we packed up the scene in to a box but I fully expect my son to want to play with it again and most definitely next Christmas. The advent calendar cost us around £15.00 which granted isn't cheap for an advent calendar but I do feel it was well worth that money and I expect I will look to buy another one of the playmobil or Lego advent calendars next Christmas. I should think that deals will occur over the year and so it would be wise to keep a look out for them should you be interested. Thank you for reading my review! Read the complete review |

Playmobil 4802 Shell with Cannon
by supersonic75 *~*Introduction*~* I have two sons who love Playmobil, but in particular my youngest son Zak is a real fan and especially has a thing for the pirate sets. For his most recent birthday he received the Playmobil 'Shell with Cannon' set which I will now focus on in this review.. *~*Price, packaging & ... availability*~* This set comes housed in a fairly sturdy cardboard box which is decorated in the usual Playmobil uniform colours of blue. On the top of the box is a large picture of the items contained, whilst on the sides are images of the cannon working and different scenarios including the shell 'in action'. For ordering purposes this is set no 4802 and costs in the region of £15 depending on where it is purchased from. Personally I find that ordering online I tend to get the cheaper deals but this was a birthday gift from my parents to Zak and was purchased from our local Toymaster store costing £15 exactly. Playmobil is a very popular brand of toy and can usually be found in most toy outlets and even larger supermarkets (Morrisons has recently been stocking several different Playmobil items at reasonable prices, so it's worth checking out the toy aisles if interested). If looking online there is a fantastic stockist called 'buyforlessonline' which I have mentioned in previous reviews but there items are reasonably priced, P&P is sometimes free or very minimal and they deliver within a few days at the most. *~*What's included in this set?*~* This is part of the ghost pirate sets which both of my boys love due to the fact that the ghost pirates have skeletons printed on their fronts and the bones glow in the dark. Inside the box are the following items: *One instruction manual *1 large clam 'shell' in a brown colour which is in two pieces (to be clipped together) *1 solitary Ghost Pirate *1 cannon *1 missile *1 sea monster *An assortment of weapons (axe, pistol etc) *~*Our thoughts on this set*~* What I do like about all Playmobil sets is the fact that all of the pieces included are all individually separated in sealed bags, so there is no hunting around trying to find a vital missing piece. There is very little setting up of this set as apart from clipping together the large clam shell (which is very easy to do) everything else is all ready to be played with. The quality of the character is just as impressive as any other I have come across and I particularly like the detail included to make the bones and rib area stand out with the lurid green colouring. As expected when Zak opened this he insisted on turning the lights out again to see if the pirate did in fact glow..and it does! It's not overly bright but you can definitely make out the shape of the skeleton and it's something that certainly seems to appeal to young children. The durability seems to be excellent as this set has been 'bashed about' during various role play (run over by the large pirate ship was yesterday's adventure) and everything has come out unscathed. The only thing I find to be annoying with this (and all pirate/ knights sets) is the fact you get tiny little clip on parts that attach to the characters belts. This is to hand their swords or whatever weapon happens to come with them and whilst it is a good idea the clips in question are only approximately 1/3 of a centimetre in size so are not only very fiddly to handle but easily get lost and have been eaten by the vacuum on many occasions. The cannon can easily be clipped into the clam shell or used separately and the missile is both easy to load as it just clicks in and again easy to fire by pressing a small discreet button on the cannon. This is a very good set though Zak was slightly disappointed by the 'sea monster' as it turns out to be very little and approximately 2 inches in size. Though it doesn't look humongous on the box it does give the indication it is bigger so he was a bit let down by this though it didn't dampen his enthusiasm for the forthcoming pirate adventures his set was about to have. *~*Summery*~* This is a good pirate set for fans of Playmobil and though isn't Zak's favourite it certainly doesn't disappoint in the playing stakes. Ages 4 upwards. Read the complete review |
