My daughter was 18 months at Xmas (and dont we know it, we are well into the terrible twos now) and one of her gifts was this rather lovely farmer/tractor/trailer/cow set.
This is part of the Playmobil 123 range which is designed for 18 months plus, and is a simplified version of the traditional Playmobil toys.
It came in sealed between two plastic shaped boxes attached to a brightly coloured piece of card with the logo 'Playmobil 123' printed on it. The design of the packaging means that once you have got into the box there are no plastic ties etc to fiddle with...a godsend when you have a small child wailing for the "tactor" under your feet!
Once opened the set consists of a farmer in a rather fetching blue hat, a green tractor, red trailer and a single black and white cow.
The farmer's head turns 360 degrees and he bends 90 degrees at the hips so that he can fit into the tractor. My daughter has only just managed to work out how to fit the man into the tractor at 22 months, she is much happier trying to fit the cow in there! The farmer's head and feet are also too big to fit in any important orifices-a vital consideration when purchasing toys for this age group.
The tractor and trailer are bright and chunky, the wheels turn and the back flap on the trailor goes up and down and up and down and up and down and up and down - its very sturdy as it has put up with several months of constant and vigourous ups and downs with no ill effects, whereas other less well put together toys have given up the ghost.
The tractor and trailer are connected by a simple ball and half socket linkup. I have to use two hands to fix it and my daughter hasnt managed to put it together yet, but her little friend of the same age puts it together no problem. Once it is together though it can put up with some quite vigourous imaginative play, scaling mountains and even doing a certain amount of flying.
The cow is a simple plastic formed shape in pink, white and black, nothing moves, nothing has broken off and it is still in good shape. However its horns when it first arrived were rather sharp, not sure if we got a faulty one, but it didnt take long to sort this little problem out with a nailfile and some elbow grease.
Overall this has been a definite success, its chunky enough for my daughter to hold tightly and easily, the bright colours appeal and its safe enough for me to feel happy with her playing with it unsupervised.
Its also longlasting, we recently received a box of toys from friends whose ten year old had finally grown out of them and reluctantly agreed to part with. What did we find at the top? An older red version of this tractor! Its at least 5 years old but its still in great condition and we have welcomed it onto our farm.
There are a few minor negatives- the tractor and trailer dont link up to anything other than Playmobil 123, the farmer is fiddly to get into the tractor. The farmer is also currently missing and as he is small enough to get wedged in lots of interesting places, we are hoping he turns up of his own accord (preferably not in the washing machine or tumbledrier, please).
I really like the Playmobil 123 range, there are a wide range of sets ranging from a few pounds for a couple of figures to around £15 for larger sets e.g the farmhouse. They are good quality, hardwearing and fantastic for independent imaginative play. They also fill a gap in the playset market for children who are too young for the sets with all the fiddly bits. We also have the shepherd, the tow truck and the horse and rider and are equally happy with these (although the tow truck yellow crane thing does tend to come off quite a lot).
My parents bought this so I have no idea where they got it from or how much they paid. However I have seen them available on several internet sites for varying prices, but it seems to be priced on average around £8.
