Last Christmas I felt both of my children were finally old enough to appreciate the complexities of Playmobil. They make fantastic detailed sets, but I was put off buying anything before my kids were 5 due to the number of small parts in the set and the fact my youngest son put a lot of things in his mouth. Last year he was 4 and a half, and had finally grown out of this habit a bit, so I felt that we would be ok.
I picked a theme for each child. My eldest son was just 6 last Christmas, so we decided that he would enjoy sets based upon a castle theme. We had visited a couple of castles and he had done knight training at Dover Castle that summer, and he was very interested in toys of this theme.
We bought a big castle, Grandma bought some smaller sets to supplement the bigger castle. One of the sets was this simple one. All it contains is one knight with his armour and weapons. For me, this is a great little set if you already have other sets within the theme, but as a starter set I think it would be quite dull for the child.
It is priced between £3.50 and £5, which to me is a fantastic price. I've never seen it in shops, but I have seen it online with a recommendation of only being suitable for children age 3 plus. I can only recommend that you judge from the child you are giving it to. Personally, my eldest would have been fine, but my youngest needed to be over 4 before he had enough sense and hand/eye control to use this properly.
There are a good number of pieces in this set for the price. The figure is around 7.5cm tall, and he is wearing a chest plate, armour on his arms, and a helmet. He has a little scabbard where his sword can be stored, and he aslo has an axe and a shield. Pieces like the shield and sword can be interchanged in the hand quite easily, and they stay in place when the child puts it in the knight's hand. I like that the pieces are not that small in this set, and nothing has been lost in play. Also, I don't constantly get asked to help the kids put weapons in the knight's hand. Play can be quite independent.
This is a good basic set, but like I said earlier, much more fun with more knights so you can recreate battles. It is a good size for a stocking filler type present.
