Advantages: pocket money price, lots of items come in the set
Disadvantages: too much treasure to fit in the little chest.
When it came to choosing toys for my children this Christmas, I didn't want to go down the route of more lego or figures of superheroes as I felt my children had plenty of those and I was thinking they would benefit from something that got them playing in a slightly different manner.
I chose to invest in a selection of playmobil as I like that the figures are available for a huge variety of scenarios from the everyday characters like those found in hospitals or fire stations, to the more adventurous like spacemen, pirates and knights. I decided to get my children each a large playmobil set as their main present from me and my husband. My mother in law then decided it would be best if she supplemented our larger sets with smaller sets along the same theme.
My youngest sons theme was pirates. He got a large pirate ship, so he needed some more accessories to go with this theme to enhance his play. One of the sets my mother in law picked was this little Bucanner. He is quite similar to the figures we got with the boat in that he has slightly raggy looking clothing and a bit of a rugged appearance. He is wearing gold looped earrings in both ears and has a gold bracelet and a pirate hat. The bit my children like most about him is his peg leg.
Playmobil figures are aimed at children aged 4-10. My children are now 4 and 6, and they really like the small pieces that come in the range, and are both thankfully now old enough to not put these smaller items in their mouth. I had some playmobil bought for my younger son last Christmas when he was only 3 and a half, and he did lose quite a few of the smaller items, and for some reason he also took the hair off the figure and chewed it so it wouldn't go on. Therefore I recommend that you do follow age guidelines on this one as even if your child doesn't chew, I don't think they are responsible enough at 3 to keep all the bits together as a set, and it is a shame when bits get damaged or lost and the role play is reduced.
This particular set comes with quite a few small pieces. The pirate has two weapons - a sword and a pistol. He has a scabbard to wear over his shoulder. I found that I had to show my children how to put this on the figure as you need to raise the arms on it to make it go on over their shoulder and sit properly across the body. The sword fits nicely into the hole in this, and the sword and gun both also fit snugly in the hand of the pirate.
The pirate also has a small bag to hold, but he also has a little chest and a pile of gold coins. Initially my 4 year old was pretty cross because all of these gold coins would not fit into his little treasure chest as he wanted to make sure they all went somewhere safe to not get lost. He cheered up when he realised that he could put them in the bigger chest that came with his boat, but if you are buying this, it might be worth having a little tub to put the coins in to keep them safe.
This set sells for around £6. It is a great little set with a lot of pieces for this price, and is a lovely extra for adding to the other sets that we own. There are quite a few pirate themed items ranging in price up to around £100 for the pirate ship at full price.
The size of the figure is great for holding in a small hand. The figures bend at the waist so they can sit down, and there arms move up and down from the shoulder. The hands are great for holding things in, and it wasn't long before my son was creating a great game where the pirate was carrying about his treasure in the chest and trying to hide it from a playmobil dragon. It's a lot of fun and great at stimulating imaginative play.
Summary: A great little character for stimulating imaginative play.
