I have two sons who love Playmobil, but in particular my youngest son Zak is a real fan and especially has a thing for the pirate sets. For his most recent birthday he received the Playmobil 'Shell with Cannon' set which I will now focus on in this review..
*~*Price, packaging & availability*~*
This set comes housed in a fairly sturdy cardboard box which is decorated in the usual Playmobil uniform colours of blue. On the top of the box is a large picture of the items contained, whilst on the sides are images of the cannon working and different scenarios including the shell 'in action'.
For ordering purposes this is set no 4802 and costs in the region of £15 depending on where it is purchased from. Personally I find that ordering online I tend to get the cheaper deals but this was a birthday gift from my parents to Zak and was purchased from our local Toymaster store costing £15 exactly.
Playmobil is a very popular brand of toy and can usually be found in most toy outlets and even larger supermarkets (Morrisons has recently been stocking several different Playmobil items at reasonable prices, so it's worth checking out the toy aisles if interested).
If looking online there is a fantastic stockist called 'buyforlessonline' which I have mentioned in previous reviews but there items are reasonably priced, P&P is sometimes free or very minimal and they deliver within a few days at the most.
*~*What's included in this set?*~*
This is part of the ghost pirate sets which both of my boys love due to the fact that the ghost pirates have skeletons printed on their fronts and the bones glow in the dark.
Inside the box are the following items:
*One instruction manual
*1 large clam 'shell' in a brown colour which is in two pieces (to be clipped together)
*1 solitary Ghost Pirate
*1 sea monster
*An assortment of weapons (axe, pistol etc)
*~*Our thoughts on this set*~*
What I do like about all Playmobil sets is the fact that all of the pieces included are all individually separated in sealed bags, so there is no hunting around trying to find a vital missing piece. There is very little setting up of this set as apart from clipping together the large clam shell (which is very easy to do) everything else is all ready to be played with.
The quality of the character is just as impressive as any other I have come across and I particularly like the detail included to make the bones and rib area stand out with the lurid green colouring. As expected when Zak opened this he insisted on turning the lights out again to see if the pirate did in fact glow..and it does! It's not overly bright but you can definitely make out the shape of the skeleton and it's something that certainly seems to appeal to young children.
The durability seems to be excellent as this set has been 'bashed about' during various role play (run over by the large pirate ship was yesterday's adventure) and everything has come out unscathed. The only thing I find to be annoying with this (and all pirate/ knights sets) is the fact you get tiny little clip on parts that attach to the characters belts. This is to hand their swords or whatever weapon happens to come with them and whilst it is a good idea the clips in question are only approximately 1/3 of a centimetre in size so are not only very fiddly to handle but easily get lost and have been eaten by the vacuum on many occasions.
The cannon can easily be clipped into the clam shell or used separately and the missile is both easy to load as it just clicks in and again easy to fire by pressing a small discreet button on the cannon.
This is a very good set though Zak was slightly disappointed by the 'sea monster' as it turns out to be very little and approximately 2 inches in size. Though it doesn't look humongous on the box it does give the indication it is bigger so he was a bit let down by this though it didn't dampen his enthusiasm for the forthcoming pirate adventures his set was about to have.
This is a good pirate set for fans of Playmobil and though isn't Zak's favourite it certainly doesn't disappoint in the playing stakes.
Ages 4 upwards.
