Playmobil 4825 Fire-fighters with Water Pump
Advantages: Great for imaginative play well made fun squirting water
Disadvantages: No container to hold the bits in
The set is really full of lots of small parts and for this reason it is definitely suitable for the age group suggested of 4 and above due to chocking risks and it being a bit fiddly to set up. Initially it did take a bit of reading to understand how all the bits interconnected and worked but once you have done it a few times it is easy and some of the sections such as applying stickers to the fire hydrant don't need to be done again. The stickers have also remained on well despite being subjected to water on many occasions.
The set includes two fire men one of these wears a traditional fire fighters outfit with a recognisable white helmet with black neck protection and visor like all the other fire fighters in the Playmobil sets. The other one my son refers to often as the spaceman as it is a fire fighter in silver protective clothing that does indeed make him look like he could go into space. These click on to the fire fighter very easily and my son is more than able to take them on and off now that he has been shown how to once.
Also in the set are various equipment bits such as a box, hazard triangle, oil drum with a fire and bits of hose. Whilst these are occasionally used to aid his imagination and play with fire rescues they are not as popular as the hose and pump in the set which is the star attraction for this set. The various sections of hose can be interlinked to make it as small or as large as you want. My son tries to have it as large as he can and with two ends to squirt out one for each fireman. Initially this took a lot of fiddling around for him to figure out how they connected with the red values in the set and how he needed to make sure no ends were open where he didn't want them to be, but after a few months of play it is now down to a fine art. The red box for the pump was easy to construct and stays assembled very easily. You do need to make sure that the washer is in place correctly as if you do not have a tight seal the water when pumped will not squirt out at the end of the hose. Equally you need to make sure if you are running the hoses though the section that has the lever on it to stop and start and control the flow of water is set to open. If it is set to close after a couple of pumps the pressure inside the pump box builds up and send the pump lid off with water flying up at your child which has happened to us on several occasions. Filling the pump box is again very easy to do and my 4 year old is more than able to use the sink to dribble water from the tap to fill it up.
The main appeal of this set for my son is the pump and squirting water with his firemen. He loves using this toy for lots of great imaginative play alongside his fire engine and his other toys such as their being a fire at the castle and people need saving. I do love playing alongside him and watching him play with this toy as he just has so much fun with it. You do need to be careful where they are with the toy as it does have a really powerful squirt being able to reach at least 30 cms away with it and I have been personally been squirted a lot with it in the course of the games and can attest to its power and wetting abilities.
There are a lot of bits with the set and initially we tried to fit them into the fire engine we have but they are too big for that so we use an ice cream container to store them in. I do wish they came with a small box for storage as otherwise some bits like the valves would be easily lost as they are very small.
Overall I think this is a great set for any budding fire fighter, there are lots of fiddly bits so the age range suggested is spot on I think and it has taken my 4 year old a bit of practice to understand how they all work. Retailing at around £20 it is not a cheap set but it is often on offer on Amazon from around £12 which is a great buy I think. My son loves his and uses it well in all of his imaginative play so a full 5 stars from us.
