Playmobil is a very popular toy in this house - both with my six year old son and, increasingly, with my three year old daughter. My little girl always wants to join in with her big brother's games but, in normal sibling style, he doesn't always want her to play with his toys. As a result of this, we have been getting her a few little Playmobil sets of her own. She received the Playmobil 4860 Girl with Swimming Ring from Father Christmas as a stocking filler, mainly because it was a simple little set which I thought would appeal to her, but also because I thought it might work well with the Playmobil Swimming Pool which her big brother got as a birthday present.
* The Product *
This is one of the smaller Playmobil sets with a RRP of £4.99. It contains just two main elements - a little girl and a turtle shaped swimming ring. In addition to this, there are a pair of flip flops and a bow for the little girl's hair. The detail of the pieces is lovely - the little girl has a green swimsuit with a floral design, a pretty bow to clip into her hair (not ideal for swimming, but never mind) and green flip-flops that match her swimsuit. The turtle shaped rubber ring is bright orange with yellow detailing and a cute smiley face.
* Playability *
In isolation, the playability of this set is very limited. The turtle swimming ring does actually float, so it does have the potential to be used as a bath toy. However, if you're planning to do this I would recommend making sure that the hair bow and flip-flops don't go in the bath as they are small enough to be washed down the plughole! It comes into its own when used in conjunction with other sets - my children currently have the swimming pool filled with water set up on a towel on the kitchen floor, and the little girl is just one of the many children enjoying an afternoon at the pool. It would also work well with the Playmobil 4149 Beach Holiday Compact Set as the more people/accessories you have, the more options for play there are. With the other sets, there are plenty of opportunities for imaginative play, using the small world environment of the Playmobil people to either invent your own stories or re-enact memories of holidays in the sunshine. My two are currently playing a complex game involving the swimming pool, two leisure boats and a pirate ship which is planning an attack on the peaceful holiday scene - as I said, the possibilities are endless.
* Would I Recommend It? *
Yes, but only if you already have, or are planning to buy, other sets which it could become integrated into. It is perfect as a stocking filler / little present, but it does need the addition of other elements around the same theme to enhance the play experience. Without these, there is only so much that a child can do with it - it may have passing success as a bath toy, but there is not enough to it for it to hold a child's attention for very long. My little girl does like this set, but she only plays with it if the swimming pool is out (which isn't that often as it usually results in a very wet kitchen floor). If the pool isn't out, then this doesn't really get a look in. I'm giving it a four star rating as it is good quality and reasonable value, but only as an addition to existing sets.
