Playmobil 4888 Sled Carousel
I feel so old!
My little girl has just celebrated her 5th birthday and received lots of different toys and games from a number of different people. She was also very lucky to receive some money and she has got to the age that she remembers exactly how much she has got and the fact that it has not been spent yet! Therefore, after days and days of our little monster, I mean princess, bugging us to take her shopping, we finally gave in and braved the cold so she could pick a few bits out to bring home with her.
Last year, our little girl really started getting into Playmobil, and has since collected a number of different items. Her most recent purchase is the Playmobil Sled Carousel from the Christmas range (Product number 4888).
The set comes in a reasonably large box with the beautiful image of the toy on the front and back. When you open the set, you will find that, like most children's toys, the set comes in separate bags in which you will need to assemble. From previous experience, children can get rather upset when a new toy takes forever to assemble, though luckily this set did not take too long. The instructions are very helpful, and for once in plain English with diagrams - though even without instructions, this toy is very easy to work out. The most fiddly part is sticking on all the stickers to the main part of the carousel and to the sleds themselves. Once stuck, they are difficult to pull back off again, so do try to get them on in the right places first try! The rest simply needs clicking into place and is quite self explanatory. The only part which confused me is the way the top part just sits on the central part. I expected it to be more secured than it was, though all it does is sit there. I guess this helps the carousel go round, though it is also easy for the child to take apart!
Once the set is put together, it does not appear anything grand and fantastical, though if you purchase the other Christmas sets, I am sure it will all look wonderful together. The stickers around the main toy and the sleds make the toy look much better, however, and add a lovely touch of the Christmas feel to the toy with Christmas trees, snow covered houses and Playmobil people in Santa suits. The bottom of the base is what lets the appearance of the toy down in my opinion, with a pale blue colouring to it. It is designed like floorboards, though it doesn't seem to match the rest of the look of the toy. The stickers are around the sides of the base and also around the central piece which does help a little, though. The main part of the central area is red which leads up to a gold roof which has holes in the top to enable the child to see what they are doing. This is also covered with beautiful stickers around the sides. The gold and red colour scheme also continues on the sled's which finishes off the Christmassy feel extremely well (if not for the pale blue base it would be perfect!).
This toy does not come with the usual amount of accessories which are normally apparent in Playmobil packs, though it does have a couple. The accessories include three small winter hats, one for each of the child Playmobil people included. Each hat is a different style and colour, with one style I have never seen in a Playmobil set before. The other two are average hats which are found in many sets, including older Playmobil sets. As well as the three children, there is also one adult included with this set.
The Playmobil people are as you usually find, with movable arms, heads and legs and hands which turn and grasp objects. Each person is dressed in a very modern look and includes one boy, two girls and an adult female.
The base is quite lightweight, so when the top spins around it can move slightly. It works better on a carpeted floor, and only really moves if the toy is spun very fast. To spin the toy, all the child needs to do is spin the top area of the toy. This in turn spins the sleds around and also swings them out which creates a great effect, and something my daughter loves. There are three sleds and each child sits in them perfectly. They hold on to the red bar which then goes back as it would on a real carousel like this and holds the person it. The Playmobil child does not have to hold on to stay in so if a young child struggles with moving the hands in to place, then this does not matter - as long as the bar is back. The sleds are also a perfect size for the adult Playmobil people to sit in, and the size of the adults hold them in place without worry.
Everything in this set is very well made and is well thought out. Each piece stays in place and there are no small parts to be concerned about. As everything is simply clicked into place, there is a concern that children will be able to pull it apart, and in turn break it if it is pulled the wrong way, though as this set is aimed for the ages of four and above, it should withstand some rough play. My daughter has just turned five, as mentioned above, and she has had no problems with the set at all, and so far, no breakages.
The set is quite small, though in comparison to other Playmobil toys, it is of correct size.
My daughter absolutely loves this addition to her Playmobil toys. She has been after this set for a while and when we bought it home, she has not stopped playing with it. Her imagination has always been wonderful, and watching her play with this set just brings out the best of it. She combines this set with her other Playmobil bits for extra fun. My opinion is much the same as my daughters. It is a lovely set, and although appearance could have been enhanced, it is a perfect, Christmassy set.
We bought this set for £11.99, and it can be found for a similar price on Amazon. Considering the high prices of products in the Playmobil range, this is actually a fair price.
Both myself and my daughter agree that this is a lovely little set and a wonderful idea for a Christmas present for a child over the age of four. I would fully recommend this toy to all children who love Playmobil, and it certainly gets my five star rating!
