This playmobil zoo was bought as a Christmas present for my 14 month old daughter. I was very impressed with the quality of the pieces and they were the perfect size for her little hands and too big for her to swallow (she still likes to put things in her mouth).
We have a fair few playmobil sets but this was our first 123 set and I would buy more. My daughter always heads straight for her older brother's playmobil sets but they contain many small parts so this is ideal for her. However, my 3 year old also loves playing with this and I can see it being used for many more years to come. It's durable and has a lot of play miles-something I look for in every toy we buy.
The set contains farm animals as well as zoo ones but the favourite piece in our household is the pram with the baby.
The tree is a little difficult to put together for small hands and the bridge doesn't seem to appeal to my children and I think it could have been left out without taking anything from the set.
Overall, a lovely play set that is played with time and time again.
This lovely little set is often on offer in Tesco or on Amazon. I picked mine up for £15 which was a bargain from Tesco.
The set is recommended for 18 months to 3 years. I think it's play value could last longer and it could also be merged with the 4+ older version of playmobil for additional play.
The set is large for the price, you get a lot of good quality, brightly coloured play pieces. You get a tractor, fences, some trees, playmobil figures, and some lovely playmobil animals aswell as some additional food, bench and bridge pieces. All the pieces are well made and stand the test of time, both in terms of quality of piece and look and feel. They don't age. I can remember playing with similar playmobil when I was younger. It is timeless in my opinion.
The fence pieces click together so you can make circular pens for the animals. The people figures bend at the waist so they can sit on the bench or in the tractor.
My son likes to play with this set and make himself a zookeeper.
Playmobil has a great resale value on ebay or other selling sites so this is a good investment. Friends of mine have also kept their children's playmobil sets for their grandchildren as it is such good quality.
I won't hesitate to buy more playmobil and would buy this set as a gift for a friend if it is on offer again at Christmas.
I bought my son this zoo set from Playmobil when he was 18 months old as he was showing a real love of animals and there were not many toys available that were suitable for him at that age but that he would get use out of for a few years afterwards. I thought that this playmobil set would definitely be something that would do that as the minimum suggested age limit is 18 months but it is the kind of toy that can be used for imaginative play right through his toddler years. We have had the set for a year now and, at two and a half, he still loves to play with it - so it looks like I will be proved right. It was on offer at half price in Tesco at the time so I got it for £20 which seemed a bargain at the time and it is currently priced around the £30-40 mark having quickly browsed online.
Playmobil is essentially a series of plastic playsets which are usually themed. This set is part of the zoo series and contains several components - all of which come loose in a large cardboard box which features a picture of the full product on the front. This set is, as I said earlier, for children from 18 months plus but there are sets aimed at older children available too.
The set contains various parts, including 9 animals - elephant, giraffe, monkey, bird, zebra, horse, donkey, sheep and a rabbit - 5 people, a tractor and trailer, two water troughs, park bench, pram, two trees, two bushes, birds nest, fences for two enclosures and a green arch. All pieces are made from a smooth plastic and are very lightweight. The trees come in pieces that you can slot or screw together (very simple) and the fences need to be pushed together to connect them too but there is not much assembly to it.
My son loved this set instantly at 18 months and loved to hold and explore the animals. He also instantly loved the tractor and trailer which he could push along our floor and load with the animals from the set. The pieces are lovely and chunky and a great size for toddlers hands. There are one or two components that are a bit smaller than others - the bird, troughs and rabbit - so I only felt comfortable letting him play with this fully supervised at this young age as he still had a tendency to want to explore things with his mouth! The set was a great talking point for play time with mummy as we could discuss what animals there were and what noises they make etc.
As my son has aged and developed, he plays with this set totally differently. He plays a lot more independently now and his imaginative play had really developed with this. He now loves to set the zoo up as he sees fit - rather than having it set up for him - deciding which animals should go in which enclosures, who should drive the tractor and what animal they should transport today. He also makes the animals drink from the troughs and makes the monkey climb the trees.
He does still get frustrated with a few parts of the assembly though. One tree has leaves that push on to the branches and click into place. These need to be correctly lined up and are quite stiff to get in place - he lacks the strength and co-ordination to do so which frustrates him as he becomes increasingly independent and wants less help with things. The tractor and trailer also joins with a push-in ball and socket type joint which is quite stiff and, although my son has mastered this one, it does frequently come apart when being pushed around which is a source of annoyance for him! The fences are also a slight cause of frustration as they come in two parts that click together and then are freestanding so you position them in a circle to form an enclosure. This then leaves gaps between the fences and my son will frequently knock them over during play.
This set will keep my son entertained for a good length of time per play (usually around half an hour to 40 minutes which, for a full of energy toddler is pretty decent going!). He especially loves to play with this with his older cousins and make the animal noises with them so it is great not only for imaginative play but encouraging social interaction too. We also use other plastic zoo animals that he has picked up from zoo visits etc to supplement the set and these add interest to it too.
I am really pleased with my purchase and think I got great value for my £20. I would hesitate to say that it was worth the £40 I have seen it reach as there are probably not enough components to it to warrant such a high price tag. I would say anything from £25-30 was a reasonable price to pay though. The set is undoubtedly good quality. The animals are well made and very appealing to children with simple, smiling faces and a really smooth plastic finish. They are chunky and lightweight so pose no danger either. It would be nice to have a few more traditionally 'zoo' animals in the set as I would argue that sheep, horses, donkeys and rabbits are more suited to a farm set. The addition of rhinos, tigers or lions would be a definite bonus. Perhaps a little ice cream kiosk or hot dog stall would add value to the set too as it would add another dimension to the play.
The people in the set are decent and bend at the waist so they can sit to drive the tractor or on the bench. However, they do not have working arms which would have been nice so they could actually drive the tractor or push the pram.
I think the set will last my son for a good while yet as he learns to play more and more independently. I like the fact that, whilst aimed at younger toddlers, it is not too 'babyish' and I can see him quite happily playing with this at 4 years old (as his older cousins do) without worrying that it is 'for babies' but at the same time, younger siblings and cousins can join in with the play safely.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this set and I hope to add to it in the near future with other playmobil sets - there are various other animal sets that would make a lovely addition.
My son received this cool Playmobil zoo/farm for Christmas and I'm really glad he did as I used to play with play mobile when I was younger and loved it but this is the first set we have had since I had kids. On the box it says that it's suitable for the age 1 and a half plus and I would say that is about right even though my son enjoys playing with it now at 14 months. All the pieces are solid and fairly chunky and do not have small parts so there is nothing you would be worried about a little kid swallowing. The pieces are also quite robust and stand up to a lot of banging and heavy play from my kids. The pieces are basically just big lego pieces really and are intended for smaller children who are too small for lego.
This is such a nice set as it includes lots of different pieces to really make it fun and you can come up with a lot of different games and situations to play on the farm.
The set hardly needed any putting together as its all pretty much whole to begin with. all i needed to do was add some green palms to the trunk of a palm tree, the top of a bush to another tree and link the fences together. Then, you are ready to play.
Firstly I think the animals are brilliant. There is a giraffe, an elephant, a zebra, a horse with a saddle on, a bird, a sheep, a rabbit and my personal favourite a very cool monkey who you can sit in the tree. The animals are all pretty true to life in colour and size (compared to each other that is, they are not life size!) and it's easy to spot who is who.
The farm comes with a tractor and a trailer and so you can transport the animals in it if you wish or put them in the pasture with the fences around them. The animals have some water troughs and also some bundles of grass for them to eat which is great.
There is also the farmers family that comes with the set because of course you need a whole family on the farmer. There is the farmer in some workwear overalls who can drive the tractor and the farmers wife who has a baby that she pushes around in its own little pram. There is also a little girl and a male tourist with a camera round his neck who you can play visit the farm with. If he gets tired there's a nice bench where he can sit down and watch the goings on down on the farm. All of the people come with legs that you can bend at the hips so they are all able to stand up or sit down which is nice
From the box you can see that the adult people measure 7cm and the child measures 5.5cm so there's no chance of swallowing them.
We have a lot of fun playing with this and I'm sure you will too. Like I've said above this was a gift but I had a quick look on Amazon and this is retailing for £35.99.
