About a year after the Playstation 2 was released, ‘Square’ released their first game to appear on Sony’s new console. No, it wasn’t the sequel in the hit ‘Final Fantasy’ series, nor was it a sequel to their many other games like ‘Vagrant Story’ or ‘Secret of Mana’. In fact it wasn’t even a Role-Playing Game. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you…’The Bouncer’! While at times it felt like an interactive action movie, the story and characters are so great (and the presentation is so freaking awesome!) that it makes the whole game much better. And the gameplay itself, while very simplistic, is half decent. -(The Story)- The story follows three bouncers (that’s ... Read the complete review

Back in high school, I once new a lad who fell for Sony's PS2 advertising on the most hilarious scale possible. I don't mean that the ads made him want a PS2, or even really want one, I mean he actually thought the console would change the world, and all that 'Emotion Engine' and 'Third Place' crap was fact. Even when he got it, he staunchly fought for the PS2 against even the slightest of criticisms, even against impossible odds. Then, one day, he played the Bouncer. I remember that day well, he came into computing class, and he was just depressed, his soul was destroyed, everything he had believed in had been proven to be a farce, all with this one game. ... This is a review on an old(ish) game that may make you remember a classic game called Streets of Rage, this is the first beat-em-up game that Square-Enix has made, and it is called The Bouncer. It is a fighting game, and has lots of things for you to do, great fun for all ages and lasts for ages. Game ***** There are quite a few things you are able to do on this game and it worth a purchase, especially if you loved the streets of rage series. Anyway, there is Story Mode, which allows you to go around the streets and beat people up and fight bosses, then there is VS Mode, which allows you to do a one on one fight with a friend or computer, and then ... The Bouncer is a rather strange outing from Squaresoft that can't really be recommended, because it can be beaten in the time it takes to drink a cup of coffee, but it is a fun enough experiment that's worth giving a quick whirl if a mate of yours has it. The premise is simple - it follows three bouncers, called Sion Barzahd, Volt Krueger, and Kou Leifoh, who become embroilled in a corporate conspiracy. You can pick one of the three bouncers, each having their own fighting style, and if you play as each of them, you'll eventually be able to piece together the entire story, not that there's really much here anyway. Visually, it was quite an impressive bag when ... Read the complete review

The Bouncer was easily one of the most talked about and hyped PS2 titles before it's release. Early video and pictures of it, looked graphically insane. The real time cinemas and in game graphics, were so good that it resembled high quality CGI video more then the typical polygons we were used to. All this and a strong company like Squaresoft behind it. Sure Square has had some pretty big misses when it came to non RPGs, but hey! Square also made Einhander on the PS which was perhaps one of the finest shooters ever created. ... Read the complete review
