Advantages: Good variety of characters, Diversity of game-play tactics, Buffy!
Disadvantages: Mine had a glitch!
I found this game on Play.com for £9.99 so I thought I'd give it a look. I hadn't really looked at this game before so I didn't really know what to expect.
The game is a role play game in the 3rd person, just how I like them! I can't stand games which look through the eyes of the character, the movement of the game is too fiddley and doesn't flow too good for me.
Anyway, back to the point (I'm pretty sure I had one?!), Buffy. The story links in with the TV series from around the 5th season I think. So Willow is a lesbian, Anya is a non-demon, Spike has a chip in his head so he can't hurt humans, Faith is back on the side of the goodies, Buffy still kicks ass and Xander... well Xander is Xander.
The game has a lot of over-lapping storylines which manages to incorporate a lot of characters from the TV series. You can play as Buffy, Spike, Xander, Faith, Willow and as Sid, the puppet-doll thing with a life of it's own.
The main bulk of the story finds Buffy facing the source of pure evil known as The First. In order to beat The First, Buffy and chums must travel to a parrallel dimension and piece together a woman called Cassandra who previously defeated The First. Each member of the Scooby gang must complete their own tasks giving you the opportunity to play all available characters.
The game is for 16 years and over meaning it has a relatively good variation of Dead people and demons to fight, and also a decent gore and fear factor (but nothing over the top!)
The game flows and plays well and has a good combination of beat 'em up action and clever game play required, there's a lot of problem solving. Most levels include a combination of both which stops the game getting repetitve.
The game also has a multi-player option but these mini-games aren't very substantial and you quickly get bored of them. They are all confined to one small setting and players must see who can beat up the most baddies or catch the most rabbits! The benefit of this multi-player option is that you can play any character featured in the game eg zombies and vampires. As you complete levels in the single player mode you unlock certain characters to use in the multi-player games.
As the game progresses your characters develop and hone their skills, with my favourite being willow and her spells.
I enjoyed this game until i got to fighting an end of level demon thing and the game crashed! I assume there is a glitch in the program and I'm unsure as to how likely it is to happen again?! I have passed this game onto my cousin so I will update this review if it does/doesn't happen again!
This game is very well worth it if you can get your hands on it for a tenner! Fans of the Tv series will love to play along as their favourite characters.
