Advantages: Good gameplay, easy to learn controls and get into the game.
Disadvantages: Poor storyline, far too short.
Call of Duty 3 is a World War 2 game for various consoles (PS2 in my case).
Throughout the game, there are various tasks that you need to accomplish. The majority of these tasks involve clearing out areas and houses of enemy soldiers, however there are other variations as well. You get to drive tanks, jeeps and even have to be a spotter for targets for tanks in one level.
There is a storyline to the game, however you do work for several countries as the game progresses. This adds a bit of complication to the game as you have a different name for different levels and the first play through, you are being told what to do but I found it unclear if they were shouting at me or someone else.
The storyline isn't very good either.
On the other hand, gameplay is really quite good. The controls are simple to use and feel quite natural most of the time, the only excpetion is to swap weapons with those on the floor. You need to press and hold a button to do this. Whilst you are being shot at!
There was a really good part to this game I enjoyed and it was the fact that you can carry only two weapons. Both of these have limited number of bullets. You will run out in some levels and you will need to get weapons that enemies drop - sometimes better, sometimes worse. If you spend too long in some areas, you may run out of ammunition and this will usually lead to you failing the level.
Dying is an interesting aspect to the game as well. You don't die from being shot at only. You have a fear level. The game flashes red around the borders of the screen and you hear your breath get heavier. To much fear and they class you as 'frozen' and will die or be captured, so the game is over at this point. Interesting and different.
I found the game a little short and fiddly in some parts. You can't lean around corners, you have to step out, for example, thus exposing yourself to the enemies gunfire.
Not being experienced in this type of gaming, I selected the easy level to go through the game, but it only lasted a couple of nights and I had completed it.
Fortunately, there is also harder levels to try, but also the online gaming experience. In this, there are a few types of games you can join. Here, when you die, you get put back to the start of the level and can restart. People can join or leave during the game as well. The PS2 can handle up to 16 players on one game at once. This is much, much harder than the solo game but can also be more boring if there are only a few people on the game.
Pricing
=====
An interesting sidepoint on the price of this game is quite relevant I think. Normally I don't list prices, however I was unable to find this game under £10 anywhere. eBay prices are close to £10.
I bought my copy from game.co.uk for £9.99 with free delivery. Don't buy Call of Duty 3, however, buy the triple pack. With this you get Call of Duty 1, 2 and 3 and is currently cheaper than COD 3 on it's own. Strange, but true.
Summary: Worth the money for online play, in particular.
