Advantages: Great view (for sad o's), Great new handling system, Extensive Career

Disadvantages: Not good for people who don't like racing games, Can make you get very annoyed with the co driver

"Two over crest, then left. No cut...". And of course reply "whatever mate. I think i will take this one at 100mph and ram straight into a tree." A satisfying thing to do when you are really annoyed at your co driver. Grrrrrr.

Colin McRae had an extensive career mode. McRae 4 opens everything up, providing a huge range of gameplay options right from the start, and giving you total freedom to embark on your own rally challenge.

there are now four main championship options each offering a season of eight countries. 2Wd is the begginer's competition, with its range of easy handling cars like the Ford Puma and Citreon Saxo. Then comes the 4WD with the Lancer Evolution, Colin's ex, the ford Focus and the new Citroen Xsara. In a clever move, Codemasters have included a full group B championship filled with the grunting danger-mobiles of the early to mid 80s, like the classic Audi Quattro and it's better rival, the lancia 037.

Short but detailed intros just before the race give you a clear run down of the course and the weather conditions you are about to face. There is more complex relationship between car and road, with each wheel seeming to act to bumbs, hollows and other obstacles independently. The condition of the road seems to have a bigger effect to your car than in CMR3. In Finland, for example, where the tracks are often edged by chunks of larger stones, the car judders and slows when just one wheel sneaks out over the sidings.

The distinctive McRae thrill,is still as alive as eer. There are tons of places where you can cut loose and put the slap-dash handling into play.

The environmental detailis excellent. From tinyEnglish Villages with their quaint cottages :-) and battered road markings!, to the vast pine forest of Sweden where the sunlight reflects off the icy roads.

Away from the career mode there is an extended rally mode that now lets you create your own custom rally wi
th six stages drawn from any if the eight countries (you can have a lot of fun with this)

Summary:

Colin McRae 4 is a game for all drivers. Smash and crash casuals will enjoy the lovely visuals (sad o's). This one is a decent sized jump over the third and will impress lovers of number 3.
