Advantages: Stunning Graphics, Superior Gameplay, Effective Audio
Disadvantages: Not For The Faint Hearted
The Devil May Cry game for the PS2 has taken the nation by storm with its senseless violence and fun filled world, cast and laden with evil. The PS2 has recently been needing a game like this to make its dominance in the games market before the launch of the Game Cube and Devil may cry is nothing but that. An outstanding game to water the appetites of those blood thirsty gamers and keep the PS2 alive and well. The plot is not really complex and this is great for anyone that isn?t into long strategical games. Devil may cry is not about this, it is about gore and the exploration of the dark side. You play Dante a grown man/half demon working in a store called Devil May Cry hence the title. You?re role in this 3D world is to slay the demons in the town that you are assigned to. So where does the user come in? Well it all starts when a women on a motorcycle comes barging into your humble abode and attempts to relieve you of your life. She reaches for a sword and wrenches it into your heart, stabbing you deep in the chest, but you don?t die. Instead you resist, take the sword out of your chest and stand tall proving that you are the great son of Spartus. A man that slayed the demon Mundus 2,000 years ago and now he has arisen once again and by passing into Mallet Island you are the one that shall slay the evil arising in the town with the intention to destroy the world. The combos in Devil May cry literally make it. Some games such as Resident Evil don?t provide this facility but instead the destruction of the enemy is very monotonous, a shot here and blow there. This is what makes the Devil May Cry so unique because it is possible for the user to design their own combos and use them effectively and actionably against the enemy in a fashion that could wake the dead. This along with the many heroic stunts that are available for show are a great addition that Capcom has added to Devil May Cry. So what are the weapons like then I s
uppose should be the next question, well yes there are a lot of prehistoric ancient weapons that you can imagine being used by an barbarian but surprisingly evil is also partial to the might of a sword. At the beginning you start off with two pistols and a normal sword and this is fine to take the more simplistic less complex evils early on in the game, but as it progresses one needs more advanced weapons and you will find yourself will a shotgun, and a sword know as a Lightning Sword which is faster and much more efficient. The weapons greatly aid the ability to perform combos; one can use pistols and the sword at the same time thus increasing the action rating. Onimusha, a few of you will be familiar with this game well, this is similar to the way Devil May Cry has structured its game. When an enemy is slayed, an orb appears, collecting these orbs allows you to buy health and even magic providing you have enough orbs. So kill all you want but just be sure not to lose your own life in the process. It is possible to change the difficulty settings of the game while playing which is something that I have never seen in a game before and when one completes the game, it unlocks harder difficulty levels with more complex enemies and more brain teasing puzzles. The enemies in Devil May Cry are all zombie like deformed creatures but don?t let this put you off interacting with them. When fighting an enemy you will be graded on how well you fight for instance you have a cool metre; the better you fight the higher this shall go so it is crucial that you fight in style and that you develop as a player. Each mission brings new enemies and new things to learn, the acrobatics that Dante can perform are paramount, you have the ability to freeze in mid air and open bullet capsules onto the dead creature. He?s something our Dante, isn?t he? As I mentioned previously Dante is half human half devil and this is extremely useful. Yo
u have the ability to transform from the white haired human form to a huge devil in which the destruction of enemies is much more easier but surprisingly much more actionable. See the look of terror in their eyes when a huge devil destroys their fellow creatures. But don?t get too excited, of course the game would be far to easy if you could remain in this form forever, so there is a limited time to which you can be in this form depending on how many orbs you have which ultimately depends on how much enemies you have killed. The graphics in Devil May Cry have never been used so successfully. We all know that in games it?s those little things that really make the game worthwhile and Devil May Cry is no exception. The game is spread with little tricks such as smashing open chest to collect orbs previously hidden. The power of the PS2 has never been represented so well especially when there is up of five characters all on the screen trying to kill you, blood thirsty creatures and you must, with grace spin into the air and execute all will the smoothest and most accurate of slices. You can almost feel Dante?s fear in such situations and this is absolutely excellent. The sound and audio effects in Devil May Cry are crucial to the creation of this devilish environment. When alone wandering through the solitude castle the music is low, footsteps echo and Dante?s breaths are harsh, but when one enters an action scene; the music speeds up remarkably causing the environment and emotions to really heat up. But the effectiveness doesn?t stop there. When the enemy dies, its screams are sharp and devastating, echoing through the castle. A really and truly authentic feel. Devil May Cry is an extremely original and authentic game. Anyone that likes the Resident Evil Series will undoubtedly enjoy Devil May Cry. I wouldn?t recommend it for the faint heart or those with a weak stomach. The game is littered with guts and brains without a skull
. Too actionable is how I would describe the Devil May Cry.
