Dynasty Warriors 2 is an action game for the Playstation 2 developed by KOEI

This game is a sequel to the first Dynasty Warriors on the original Playstation. It still follows the tales of soldiers fighting in the ancient Japanese battles depicted in the Romance of the Three Kingdom story. The stories you will be familiar with if you have played any other game in the series and actually isn't that compelling anyway!

The gameplay has received a total overhaul from the simple fighting game it once was on the Playstation. In this game you can control your general, though the selection is very limited compared to later offerings, in real time on a large battlefield map your aim in each battle is to defeat the enemy army with the assistance of your army and your bodyguards, though it seems like you will be doing 99% of the killing yourself!

Gameplay is performed mainly by mashing on the attack button to let loose a stream of sword attacks, occasionally unleashing your powerful Musou attack if you find yourself in a tight spot.

Waves of dumb enemy soldiers will be on screen at once and you can use your weapon to break them down, usually these basic foes will not provide much of a challenge only lunging half heartedly at you every now and then. The enemy generals are far more of a challenge and require some skill to takedown.

The graphics aren't very detailed but do impress due to the large amount of soldiers on screen at once, it all runs very smoothly too. Impressive for such an early Playstation 2 title.

If you have a later version of the game this can't really be recommended unless you want to see where the series started off.

Summary: At the time it was very good.

Have played 3, 5 and the Orochi games but not this one. Granted, they are likely to leave you with repetitive strain industry, but were still fun. Good review, nice retrospective viewpoint :-)
