Advantages: Lots of modes, quite addictive
Disadvantages: arcade style handling, unrealistic
Deciding earlier this week to 'whip out' my PS2 and have a small play on some of my old games, I came across this... F1 2001.
If there's one type of game that has always been in abundance on Sony's consoles, it has to be the racing game, with their being so many of them: Ridge Racers, Gran Turismo, Wipeout...
Although many new, almost real, gaming systems have now been released (PS3, XBOX 360...), you sometimes miss those basic graphics and much more fun and challenging game plays. F1 2001 is one of these that are really unrealistic - with the handling more like an arcade game than a simulation experience.
The graphics are 'ok', but compared to game released today, there is no comparison. Everything moves very fast and looks good, but I feel this game is the kind you would expect to find on the even older PS1. Sounds in the game are again very unrealistic, with the engine sounds a little repetitive, although the in-game commentary is quite good.
Handling of the game is very easy, with the controls feeling more like you are playing on one of those machines in a game arcade, although despite this, the game can eventually get quite addictive.
Overall, although there are lots of modes to choose from, with the idea of having proper licences much more realistic, the game handles in an uninspired style, making it a little bit mediocre.
If you're looking in your local game score and come across this, I would certainly recommend buying it if it's cheap, otherwise, id go for something much more modern for more recent consoles such as the PS3 or XBOX 360 if you own one, otherwise, If you only own a PS3, I would serisouly recommend the much more recent Gran Turismo 4 (PS2), purely because of its realistic game play, whilst also providing a good driving simulation; there is also a vast amount of cars to race with if you are a car lover.
Thanks for reading.
Summary: worth a buy if you come across it cheap in a game store
