Formula One is one of the most popular Motorsports in the world. It’s undisputed, people from Barnsley to Bangkok just can’t get enough of those four-wheeled beasts. It’s no great surprise then that there is a mass of Formula One based games out there. For die hard fans the choice used to be Geoff Crammond’s highly rated Grand Prix series, which recently culminated in the highly anticipated Grand Prix 3. Grand Prix 3 was a bit of a disappointment for me I have to say. Yes, it was a very capable update, the graphics were good, the content was thorough but overall it was definitely lacking in several departments including sound. Sony ... Read the complete review

I'd like to do this opinion slightly differently. Instead of describing the game in a standard way, I want to write my opinion as a diary, starting from Day 1 where I bought the game, and generally showing you how Formula One 2001 maybe isn't as good a game as it first seems. Day 1 - Wow! This game is cool! The graphics are excellent, the detail on the cars is stunning. The handling seems pretty perfect as well, the analog control works really well and it's pretty good to drive. Looks like I spent some good money here. Day 3 - OK, I'm bored of winning races on Quick Race Mode now, so let's move to the Race Weekends. I'll just do ... Read the complete review

This game from Sony is brilliant and so close to the real thing you sometimes think you are actually racing against the racing superstars. The game has many different modes to race in and a two-player arcade game that you and a friend can race against 6 AI cars. There are also time trials you can play in normal and challenge. The normal one is where 2 to 16 players can take it in turn to see who can record the fastest time around a chosen track. The challenge mode is where a player does a 3 lap time trial around the SPA track and then will be given a code which they can enter on the Sony F1 site to see who the best is in the world. There is also the World ... Read the complete review

Official Formula One 2001 on the Playstation 2 is supposedly an authentic recreation of the 2001 Formula 1 series. In some respects in most certainly is, but in others it could not be further from real life. Every car and driver from the 2001 and series is available, and all the car liveries are authentic. The only drawbacks are the advertising boards and marks on the cars. The game falls in line with the Grand Prix' such as Britain and France that do not allow tobacco sponsorship, as of course this is where the game is being sold. Having said that, the liveries are still authentic, as for example with the McLaren the drivers names, David and Mika, appear ... Read the complete review

Please note that my review and rating does not take into account the multiplayer aspect of this game. Even though I don't follow this motorsport anymore, there are times when I like to immerse myself in a Formula One game. I've played a number of F1 games over the years but yet to find a title which offers both a solid racing experience and a real challenge. Formula One 2001 saw a simultaneous release for both the PS and PS2 platforms on May the 25th, months earlier than the usual Autumn dates for previous titles in this series. I imagine that this was part of Sony's strategy, to lead F1 racing into the next generation of gaming, as well as keeping EA Sports, ... Read the complete review
