Advantages: Stunning game play and graphics!
Disadvantages: May be too gory for some
From the minute you start playing God Of War you are thrown into the action!
Even during the training tutorial you are slicing through numerous enemies and spearing gigantic Hydra's through the head with the ships broken mast!
The story starts with Kratos jumping off a cliff saying ''The Gods of Olympus have abandoned me. Now there is no hope.'' We later come to realise that this is because Ares the God of War made him kill his own family (which he keeps having memories about.) To get rid of these memories he turns to the Gods for hope and makes a deal with them. If he kills Ares they will rid him of the memories. The game is set in Ancient Greece around the subject of Greek mythology.
The fast pace of this game make it very enjoyable! You'll be flinging enemies into the air, throwing them at other enemies, tearing their heads off and just generally slicing and dicing anything in your path! It's this sheer brutality that makes the game fun!
If you don't like blood and gore then this game may not be for you! It's got more gore than a slice 'em up horror game!
The graphics are stunning, not only during the cut scenes but also during game play, you may only be in the area for less than a minute but everything is near perfect down to the final splatter of blood on the wall! Not only are the graphics incredible but so is the sound, right down to the tearing of flesh and screams of innocent people that you may accidently kill whilst your slashing and hacking at enemies! The orchestral music in the background of the game is perfectly in time with the pace, becoming louder and more high pitched if you are in combat then returning to normal during travelling periods.
The enemies continuously change, with a wide variety to butcher! You'll be able to kills Hydras, Minotaurs, Harpies, Archers and Medusa's! During the boss battles you can either use a tactical approach or just sheer brutality...you choose!!
By killing these enemies you can collect Red Orbs, which you can trade in for better moves or magic or to improve attacks using your current weapons.
You can also collect Green Orbs for health and Blue Orbs to replenish magic.
Luckily enough the combat is easy to learn, with many different combinations and weapons at your disposal such as the Blades of Chaos and eventually you will unlock the Blades of Artermis. However sometimes when there are numerous enemies surrounding you, there may be times when you resort to periods of button mashing.
You can also use magic to slaughter your enemies, with 4 different attacks that yo will learn throughout the game: Poseidon's Rage, Medusa's Gaze, Zeus's Fury and Army of Hades.
There are even puzzles you have to solve which are fairly simple, such as moving blocks or pulling handles to open doors etc.
Overall this game is a graphical masterpiece in my opinion! Not only are the graphics stunning but the game play is fast paced and brutal! I'd say it's a combination of Devil May Cry and Prince of Persia but with it's own unique twist!
The only frustrating thing about it is sometimes you get surrounded by so many enemies it's almost impossible to kill them all without getting killed yourself. This may take some skill to master but everyone will get there in the end (it's usually because you weren't brutal enough to start with!)
I would recommend this game to most people apart from the squeamish as its very enjoyable and very addictive!!
Summary: Incredibly brutal, fast paced action filled game!
