Ripping arms of ancient warriors has never been so much fun (God of War (PS2))

Advantages: Looks fantastic, epic story, great characters, addictive gameplay

Disadvantages: uneven difficulty in places, some performance problems

Wow. I picked up a PS2 for some general gaming fun, being a bit behind the times, and had seen this title knocking around for a while before I decided to buy it. I was not dissapointed. The game looks fantastic (although at times tests the ability of the PS2 because od it with some tearing and slowdown) and is easy to play. The story is amazing and the level design epic. Everythign in the game is larger than life, from the weapons, to the main and supporting characters. The context-sensetive scenes (where you have to press buttons in sequence) are a bit tricky, especially when you really want to watch Kratos mangling some unfortunate enemy) but the game is ultimately quite forgiving, interspersed with some tricky sections.

But the game is just so damn beautifu, especially for a last-generation title. You'll find yourself stopping and admiring the scenery, before throwing yourself back in the chop-socky action.

If third-person hack-em ups are not your thing, then fair enough, you'll probably not like this one (hey, I hate sports games - each to ther own) but if you think you might like this game, then go for it. Strap yourself in and bater the living hell out of ancient Greece!

N.B. The game is definately for mature audiences, with more than a smattering of sexual themes thrown in on top of the glorious violence.
