Advantages: Superb gameplay

Disadvantages: Some cover songs are naff

Guitar Hero borrows the formula from the cult classic PS1 game Guitar Freaks, but adds the popular element that makes this a sure fire gaming classic. The game sees you controlling a Guitar shaped peripheral that has five coloured keys, along with a stummer which you must time correctly with the keys to perform the correct notes as the screen prescribes.

Of all of the Guitar Hero games, the original still has the best set list, in my opinion - although there are far less songs, they are seemingly more focused, and less intent on pleasing EVERYONE with chart topping anthems. This game has pure rock through and through, culminating with classics such as Pantera's Cowboys From Hell and Ozzy's Bark at the Moon.

What would this music be without some superb gameplay to accompany? The scroll bar that you read in order to hit the correct notes is absolutely perfect - there's no lag, and the game is fairly forgiving if you don't hit a note the exact milisecond that it asks you to. It also presents a fair enough challenge whilst being do-able if you put in enough time, as I rather insanely did with this stupidly addictive game.

Of course, a game such as this is never going to win awards for graphics, but it's nevertheless good looking, particularly the character designs, which emphasise a very fun style and atmosphere. The menus also help to convey that same sort of mood and feel.

This is a stunning party game that's a true delight to play with some mates and some beers - despite being limited in the multiplayer department, it has one of the best set lists of the entire series, and is extremely well produced, especially considering most of the songs are covers (although half the time it's very difficult to realise). A superb rhythm game that is only improved upon with later installments.

Summary: A great start to an amazing series
