Advantages: A good mix of Disney and FF, good combat, interesting story

Disadvantages: Combat can be repetitive, Gummy ship segments are boring

Kingdom Hearts is a role playing game from Square Enix and Disney developed exclusively for the Playstation 2.

The game stars a new protagonist (not from the existing Final Fantasy or Disney universes) called Sora he is just a regular boy dreaming of going on exciting adventures. Soras world is then attacked by the Heartless, the main villains in the game, and his friends are gone. Sora must rescue his friends and save the worlds from the Heartless bumping into many familiar faces along the way ..

The balance of Disney and Final Fantasy is tipped towards the Disney side of things and has you travelling around with Goofy and Donald for most of the game. The worlds you visit are also usually Disney environments though populated with some Final Fantasy favourites such as Cloud, Sephiroth, Squall it is nice to see them in more detailed 3D!

Gameplay is done all in real time, Sora is equipped with a keyblade which is a sword but shaped like a key. Simply mashing on the attack button is enough to get you through most fights but you do get a variety of special moves that are lifted from the Final Fantasy universe. Goofy and Donald fight with you can are pretty helpful, healing you if you are low on health and fighting the bad guys. It can get a little monotonous but the story usually kicks in when your interest starts to wane.

There are Gummy ship segments which you will have to play to travel between worlds but for some reason these just didn't seem as interesting. You simply fire upon enemies for a few minutes as you travel, it just isn't very exciting!

Graphically Kingdom Hearts is still quite good capturing the look and feel of the Disney and Final fantasy characters well, the voice work here is also very good with most of the original Disney actors returning to record lines for the game.

Despite its strange collaboration of two different franchises, Kingdom hearts succeeds and provides you with a good role playing experience.

Summary: Good RPG.
