Advantages: A not half-bad sequel that improves on the gameplay of the original....

Disadvantages: But has a shorter, weaker plot.....

The Fall Of Max Payne is a sequel to the best-selling PS2 game which sees you return to the world of undercover detective, Max Payne, some years after the original. Max is investigating a series of murders by hitmen, The Cleaners, and finds himself drawn back into his shawdowy past when he encounters his very own femme fatale, Mona Sax, whom he thought killed in the first game. Mona is essentially here Max's love interest and is every bit the cold, hard killer that Max is but with a better body!!! Together and seperately the pair become caught up in a conspiracy that can have no happy ending and revisits some of the key locations and themes used in the original.

In some ways the game is an improvement on the first in terms of graohics and game-play but equally in other ways, the shorter story and less strong plot, the game is ever-so-slightly weaker. It recieved very mixed reviews from the industry and gamers alike but if you were a fan of the first game you are gonna love this as Max is just as moody and repressed as in the original and Bullet-Time has been vastly improved. The controls too feel slicker and more polished and this is a game no PS2 collection should really be without if it already includes the first Payne game.


Overall I found this just as enjoyable and though the surrealism is slightly lowered in this game still there are some novel levels including one in which you play constricted in a Baseball Boy mascot costume!!! You also get to play as Mona for a couple of levels giving you an alternative perspective that works much better than it should!!

Available now for a knock-down price from most retailers, if you fancy some retro gaming I would highly reccommend picking both this and the original game together and playing back-to-back!! I only hope that with the release, and hopefully success, of the recently released movie based on the games that the long awaited promise of a third game finally sees fruition.

I can only dream of what a new game of this calibre and nature might look like on my XBOX360..........

Summary: More of the same as the first game.... except slightly tweaked!!
