Advantages: A few famous faces
Disadvantages: Poor graphics. Poor impressionists. Can be completed in under a week.
I bought this game without really researching into it, I went on the internet and saw that a show I found to be quite funny was making a game, since it was only £15 on release, I thought it was a bargin. It was only this way because the game was just crap. It was developed by Big Ape Productions for release in 2003.
This game is based on the MTV series in which various A-listers are re-created into clay figured which fight against eachother. The match-ups are usually topical and so it makes it quite humouros seeing people like Britney against Paris. Looking the playable characters, I thought that it was fair that these were included:
Anna Nicole Smith
Busta Rhymes
Carmen Electra
Cindy Margolis
Carrot Top
N*Sync
Dennis Rodman
Jerry Springer
Marlilyn Manson
Miss Cleo
Mr. T
Ron Jeremy
Shannon Doherty
Tommy Lee
as well as other fictious characters. I could say that only half of them were known to me but it was likely to be this way because it was intended to be releaesed primarily to an American audience. All of the characters had an indivdual moveset to them, and te special moves were suited to the character well, such as Mr. T having the "A-Team" van crush you at the end.
As the characters are based on a show where the people are made out of caly, I wasn't expecting much from the graphics, but they didn't even try. This game could have been directly transferred onto the PS1, and there would be no problems with coping wit the graphics.
In terms of unlockables, there are 7 characters to collect by defeating other characters, these arn't even wrth collecting a they are people like the Mummy and Frankenstein, they could have had celebrities because there would have been more chance that people would have bothere to do so. The commentators are also unlochable, for what reason, I do not know. They where alternate costumes for fighting which makes it that extra bit more better than what they were before.
The gameplay is very simple and this makes it suitable for anyone, this isn't enough to save the game from a bad rating though. The special mov es are the only bit of humour that you ill get out of this game, for example, choosing an N*Sync member will allow you to get all five of them in the ring at the end to pll at a limb, with one at your head, as they pull you apart. Some of the moves that the character do doesn't actually make sense according to the character though, this is evidnet by Busta Rhymes' moveset, in which he does break-danceing moves. The game simply acted on a stereotpe of his race and decided that he'd be a breaker eventhough if they had looked at Def Jam Vendetta, they'd see what he'd like to fight like. That annoyed me a lot.
The impressionist who did the voices for the characters were poor as well. I didn't expect the voice to be to similar to them becasue the actual people don't provide the names for the actual show, but still I wold like to have seen some resembelence. This leaves nothing really for this game.
A mode with was included was create-a-celebrity, needless to say it was a failure. There weren't many options avaliable and the only changes you could make were to change skin colour, hair, and to change the torso to be like the existing characters in the game. When I first decide to use this mode, a celebrity a thought to create first was Michael Jackson, this didn't even work becasue the name bar didn't fit his whole name in, so I decided to change it to "Wacko Jacko" and this didn't even fit. With a name as short as this not being able to be made, whose name can you put in there.
Another thing which makes this game so disadvantaged is that although the controls ae simple, and this would suit younger gamers, you arn't able to buy this if you are under the age of 18. The people of this age will be the only ones familrai with the show, as it only comes on after 9p.m. but If a child saw it, they are very likely to be interested as it looks to be for a younger age group.
Don't bother with this game, even if you like the series, its not worth it at all. The game's story mode akes only a couple of days to complete and the exhibition fights arn't worth doing. Needless to say, I brought this game within a week of its release, I don't see how anyone else would be able to put up with it for this long.
Summary: Poor game, not recommended
