Advantages: 2 playable characters, fun combat, good puzzles
Disadvantages: Story a little basic, graphics arent spectacular
Primal is an adventure game for the Playstation 2 developed by Sony.
The games story is really quite strange yet compelling, you play as Jen and her mission is to go and rescue her boyfriend Lewis who was kidnapped by a demon. She is approached by Scree who is a gargoyle who asks her to join him by travelling to a demonic new world and help him restore it to a peaceful state which is the only way she will be able to get her boyfriend back! It isn't the most absorbing plotline but it actually is pretty good and has some fantasy elements as interesting as you discover that Jen has connections to this other world.
The gameplay is a mix of puzzle solving and combat, Jen gains the powers to transform into various demon forms while in this world which will grant her new abilities for example one the Ferai form allows her to jump greater distances as well as increasing her attack strength, the wraith form allows Jen to stop time. Using these demon forms allows for some good puzzle solving and also some great action sequences.
You will also get to play as her gargoyle helper Scree, he is useful as he will aid you in combat by providing you with demon energy which is basically health while you are in demon form. Scree can also climb up sheer stone faces and open up new areas that Jen cannot get to unaided, he is also made of stone so is invulnerable to attacks from enemies but he isn't a fighter so you cannot just walk straight through the game unopposed!
Unfortunately this being an older game there is no co op feature, a shame as this game would have been ideal for someone to be Jen and someone to help out as Scree.
Graphics are fairly good in line with other games of the era though it is an older Playstation 2 title so don't go in expecting a visual masterpiece.
Primal is a really good and interesting game offering a good mix of puzzle solving and combat.
Summary: A good game.
