Advantages: Sheer size and variety
Disadvantages: Couple of wobbles on camera tracking
This must rank as one of the best platform games that I have had the pleasure of playing such is the enormity of the levels and the great use of humour that it utilises.
Ratchet is some sort of cross between a hare and a cat and meets Clank who is a robot when he falls out of the sky. Together they agree to take on the evil Drek who is busy plundering other planets. Each of the levels involves you having to protect a planet. You will do this by making use of all the weapons at your disposal, you start with a simple wrench however you will soon acquire such items as a bomb glove and then cannons and flamethrowers to name but a few. When you destroy an enemy robot you collect the nuts and bolts and use these as currency to purchase new weapons.
This game is a mixture of combat and puzzle solving and you will also need to acquire gadgets to help you solve the puzzles such as a swing shot or a device that lets you don the disguise of a robot. What I liked about the puzzles is that they provided a break from the combat and also helped to test other skills. They are not that difficult so they do not delay your progress by too much but they are still entertaining in their own right.
Visually the game is impressive and there are a number of objectives for each level so you can choose your route through each although the game is well designed and you do not find yourself having to back track over areas you have already played. I also liked the fact that the camera angles worked really well on this game which does not apply to a number of 3d platform games, there are only a couple of occasions where it was in the wrong position however these were few and far between. The colours are great and even the animation scenes are really well put together.
One of the other features about this game is that it eases you into the game play nice and easily, it is not hard at the beginning but the difficulty curve certainly rises as you progress and the game is quite challenging by the end and there is plenty of game play to be had and it is still enjoyable to play even after you have completed a level as there is plenty of things to discover.
I would definitely recommend this game and at £14.47 new on Amazon it is a great value game.
Summary: Great platform game well worth acquiring.

- 09/05/07 I always thought that the first title in this series was the best. Still not as good as Jak and Daxter! |
