Advantages: Excellent action, superb weapons, great vehicle sections, geo mod is good

Disadvantages: Basic storyline, quite short

Red Faction 2 is a shooter for the Playstation 2 developed by THQ.

The story of Red Faction 2 takes place after the events of the first game though you do not resume the role of Parker. The hero of this game is a soldier called Alias who turns on the corrupt government with a bunch of his squadmates to take down the tyrannical dictator Sopot who is responsible for putting the world into the chaos it is currently in. The story is pretty basic and bland and has the same sort of feel as the first game but it is decent enough for a shooter.

The games shooting action is brilliant and the game allows you to take control of some great weaponry including pistols, machine guns, shotguns and now introduces the ability to dual weild weapons and fire independently which I believe was one of the first times the feature was included in a game. Guns feel powerful and explosions cause terrain to collapse thanks to the Geo Mod technology, your character happens to be a demolitions expert so expect to see some good creative use of this technology.

The vehicle sections however are some the most fun in any game I have played, you can control Tanks and Submarines in the game but my favourite is the massive Mech you can get into and fire each of its four guns with one of the shoulder buttons, not only was this game a pioneer of the dual wielding but one of the only games that allows you to quad wield weapons, brilliant!

The only bad thing about the game is you can get through its campaign rather quickly in around 6 to 8 hours which is significantly less than the first game however there is a multiplayer mode included where you can take on bots or friends in some fun team deathmatches.

Graphics are noticeably better and the environmental distruction that the Geo Mod engine provides is still quite impressive.

Red Faction 2 is an excellent shooter that is fun to play all the way through.

Summary: A good shooter.
