A game based in Japan about how the unification arose

This is a review on the expansion pack to one of Koei's newest saga's called Samurai Warriors Xtreme Legends, though the name is quite deceiving as in fact there are no Xtreme or Legends mode in this game unlike the Dynasty Warriors Xtreme Legends, but the enhancements they have made with the expansion pack is still good enough to have a play. Produced by W-Force and created by Koei, this is one game that you do not want to miss out on if you are a fan of the Sengoku Muso era.

So, some of you now are probably wandering what is Samurai Warriors? Well it is set in ancient Japan, where clan's have formed to try and gain control of the land and become the sole ruler of it for either peace or to cause more chaos. Unlike in Dynasty Warriors, there are loads of clan's in this, many of them are small clan's that rise up to be known as hero's. Then there is the bigger clans, the more impressive ones, and one of them is known as the Oda clan, ruled by the famous Lord Nabunaga Oda, feared by peasants, also feared by rival clans as it is known that Nabunaga has demon powers and that the Heaven's favour him. Nabunaga has plans to become the ruler of the land by taking out rival clans, yet there are two clans that have risen to face this great evil. The Takeda clan, leader being Shingen Takeda, and soon to become the Sanada clan when Shingen dies, Yukimuri Sanada takes control of the clan. Also the Tokugawa clan, ruled by Leyasu Tokugawa, which they try to take Nabunaga down as he is the face of evil itself.

The aim of Samurai warriors is pretty simple, take out the enemy commander at all costs. It is a 3rd person hack n slash game, which you and normally a giant force on your side take on another enemy army, where strategies will unfold and skill will be founded out.

There are quite a few enhancements to this expansion pack that are different to the regular Dynasty Warriors ones. For a start you get to control four new Samurai Warriors with his or hers specialized weapons and skills. That means there are also four new campaigns, one for each of the new officers. Control the Imagawa clan as the famed warlord Yoshimoto Imagawa, leader of the Imagawa clan. Play as a new original officer called Ina, the warrior Princess that fights alongside her father Tadaktsu Honda who is also playable. Then that leaves the last one, Hideyoshi Hashiba, the unifier of Japan, the officer that has gotten Lord Nabunaga Oda out of a lot of tight spots.

Another added feature is there are now whole new 6th weapon levels, which can give your warriors that added advantage in battle. Also a whole new upgrade system for you to play around with and loads of new items to increase your officer to the max. You now finally get split masou gauges for two player co-op, which is a really good thing now as it use to be shared, but if you liked that you can still ask for shared in the options menu. There's expanded character growth, so your officers are able to go higher then the previous rank of level 20, improved A.I, so now the enemy soldiers attack more often, and the strategies form out better, a load of new stages and different levels of difficulty including Novice for the beginners and Chaos for experts.

Samurai Warriors Xtreme Legends includes all fifteen original officers from the original Samurai Warriors also so it adds up to be 19 playable officers. Also bonus archives where you can get information on officers throughout each clan in the entire game. Lead the new Campaign of Komaki-Nagakute, which is really fun to do, and interesting also. There are three new versus stages for you to play with a friend or even on your own and face the computer. There is Sumo, where you get to be a fat sumo wrestler, and you have to try and get as many points as you can by pushing your enemies off the arena, the one with the most points wins the match. Then there's Duel, where you and a friend of computer get to have a one on one duel in amazing arenas that have their own special advantages for you in battle. Last there is Gatekeeper, where you have to defend your gate from the enemy army charging towards you, but watch out, if your not careful you will get a charge from the mighty Lu Bu from Dynasty Warriors!. There's a whole new survival mode course for you to prove that you are the best of the best. New skills for your officers to learn, to make them stronger and tougher then ever before.

Don't just stop at Samurai Warriors Xtreme Legends, dive further into the legends of Samurai Warriors by remixing it with the original, which will enable you to play with all nineteen officers, gain you access to Officer Edit mode, so you can create your own officer and do its own personalized story line. Get to play as the original fifteen from Samurai Warriors in Samurai Warriors Xtreme Legends new battles to make it one fun game to play.

Something completely new and original to Samurai Warriors Xtreme Legends is that there is a point system. You spend these points on added bonuses such as allowing your officers to gain a higher rank then twenty, or buy their second costumes or sound files. You can gain points by doing regular battles, versus mode, challenge mode, creating your own officer and loads of other things. Practically everything you do will give you points to spend on extras. A really good enhancement that should be on all the Xtreme Legends games.

I thought this game was fairly enjoyable, as I own the previous Samurai Warriors game; it made Xtreme Legends far better. All the added extras have made the game more fun for just you on your own or with friends as its two players also. I find the game fairly addictive like all Samurai Warriors/Dynasty Warriors games, for it's strategically motions that the battles perform, and all the things you can do on it. I have played this game for ages, and have not got bored of it, but that does not necessarily mean it is a great game, it's just addictive. It's fairly original, the new battles and extras the game has are original, yet the game play is pretty much the same as Samurai Warriors and the Dynasty Warriors series, but still worth a purchase if you're into those types of games.

The graphics are quite good, they have been enhanced slightly from its original Samurai Warriors, it has gotten a bit smoother, but that's about it, but as games go, its graphics are pretty average, not very impressed with them as such, compared to other games such as Final Fantasies and other such games. The background music sounds like the original Samurai Warriors, oriental style with some hardcore rock music now and then. The sound effects are great, slashing noises, footsteps and everything really that a game likes this would need, the sound effects are very realistic. The voices are in English, but you can change it to its original Japanese language under the options menu if needed, and you will have subtitles.

The game can be very difficult depending on which difficulty you set it on, if you have it on novice, then the game will be very easy, and you pretty much cannot die very easily. But if you do it on Chaos, then you probably won't survive the battle, even for high ranked officers and expert players, you will still find Chaos a challenge to you. So the game is pretty difficult in general, like the survival modes get very tough the further you get into them. I got this game for £14.99 in Game, which is pretty much its standard price at the moment, but it is worth getting if you have the original Samurai Warriors, but if you don't, then I would steer clear of this game, as it is not particularly brilliant on its own. I enjoyed this game, I always play it remixed with the original Samurai Warriors, so then it is like the Ultimate Samurai Warriors game, but it is not worth getting on its own. I give this game 3 star * * *, as it is only good if you have the original Samurai Warriors, but its added features and new officers make it a pretty decent game. The game is rated 12+ for its mild game violence, and its strategy aspect to the game. I reccomend this game to strategy fans and fans of the original Samurai Warriors and Dynasty Warriors, but best to get if you have Samurai Warriors.
