Advantages: Graphics are as good as you'll see on PS2.
Disadvantages: There are a few moments of boredom when you're collecting money.
OVERVIEW:
The game is based on the 1983 film 'Scarface' with Al Pacino and Tony Montana is voice-acted by André Sogliuzzo.
The game starts at the end of the 1983 film and you play as the famous Tony Montana - "Scarface". The aim is to rebuild Tony's lost drug empire in Miami using numerous different techniques, such as shooting at people wildly and intimidating. Many locations from the film are recreated perfectly in the game and form a key part of the storyline. Of course very few of the film characters appear as they were killed but this takes away very little, if any, of the authenticity.
GAMEPLAY:
One thing you notice when you start playing is that the gameplay feels comfortable and slick. Enemies aren't stupid making the game tough, however, not impossible. Tony doesn't do what you don't want him to do and it is simple to lock on to opponents when shooting (if it wasn't, large swarms of gangs would tear you apart easily). The driving is close to perfection as the controls aren't too sensitive. The game is free roaming but, unlike GTA, you can't kill random people on the street (this is the only morally correct aspect of the game I encountered). You can, however, kill random gang members on the street which is likely to increase your gang heat and lead to mob wars (which might I add are fun, especially when you steal a case of money from the dead gang leader!). The police on "Scarface" are much more realistic than GTA - if your police heat reaches maximum and the whole force are after you, you will die! Although the fighting is immensely fun it can become a little repetitive.
This isn't a real issue though as there are numerous other tasks to complete. Delivering drugs to fronts and collecting money is hard but very fun and rewarding if you get it right! Money is essential in this game as without it you can't progress. Exotics are bought from a catalogue in-game which consists of Henchmen (drivers, enforcers, etc.), Cars, Mansion Decorations, Companies and Luxury Items. These give you something to really aim for away from the story line. This, in turn, means the game never really ends. You can raise money for ever and ever and in all truth, it's enjoyable.
GRAPHICS:
Bearing in mind this is a PS2 game, the graphics are stunning. Miami is sunny and alive. The buildings, cars and people look great. You can see sun change position in the sky! The only qualm that I have with the graphics is the characters' hands. They are ugly but in all honesty they aren't that important.
SOUND:
Although Al Pacino doesn't provide the voice acting in the game, Tony sounds fantastic. You wouldn't know any difference. All the lines are there and delivered to perfection, a la "Say hello to my little friend!"
Cars sound real, waves sound real. But the pinnacle of the sound in "Scarface: The World Is Yours" is the soundtrack. My God it's amazing. The soundtrack from the film is joined by an extensive collection of 80's classics. Plus you can make your own soundtrack out of this which is great. Perfect.
CONCLUSION:
I admit I took my time with this game, however, it lasted me six months. The story line is stretched by the tasks in between. There is so much to do. The story line is key to the enjoyment though and most of the flair is lost after completion.
Summary: If you liked the film I challenge you to not like this game.

- 05/09/09 I loved the Scarface films, but I have never given a game based on the series a try! Always been a bit skeptical if I am honest, but the fact that it kept you hooked for 6 months may be enough for me to try it. |
